slayer kick the ass of metallica by far - they have been able to adapt their musical style without turning their music to shit. on reports that God Hates Us All was heading into the same direction Metallica went, the band was quoted as saying "It still sounds like Slayer", which is true.
if you listen to slayer to be 'hardcore' then your fucked in the head, and obviously dont listen to much metal music. id say thats the reason why most people listen to a great deal of that shithouse black and death metal, like opeth, most cradle of filth, dimmu borgir and the like, as well as those norweigan bands who had one dude kill another and bash gays etc. personally, most hardcore metal has pathetic lyrics/singing/growling, id say a lot of people, like myself listen to it more for the purely musical content.
i listen to slayer or megadeth, or any sort of death/thrash metal wherever i am - sif im gonna give a fuck if people think im tryin to be 'tuff' i listen to what appeals to me.
Auto-Wah i agree with you about Tom Araya's vocals... they are unique, which is quite rare. However, cannibal corpse were the real inspiration for the growling shit, and yes, if you listen to their first 3 albums, its fuckin unbearable, god knows why other bands wanted to emulate it, but its not *too* bad these days. Slipknot's singer is fairly talented - listen to the 3rd album - he can sing ballards and stuff as well as doing a fair sort of growl., but you can still make out what he is singing so its ok!
