Hi,
I understand one student in my course has failed a unit 5 times. What are the university rules regarding failure? When can they kick you out?
I'm a second year Commerce student and haven't failed a unit yet - but I'm close this semester with one of them (obviously they won't ask me to leave if i fail one unit)

Just interesting to know....

Thanks,
Tom

No, don't think they'll ask you to leave. They like your money, you see.... PS. I failed once, will make up for it in Summer School.

i thin if you failed the same subject 3 times, then they will probably expel you
i think for first timers, they wil refer you to some sort fo an academic counsellor.
i think you should find what you need in your USYD handbook in regards to failing

In Commerce I believe its fail a subject 3 times and you fail your degree (I know of someone who found out the hard way)

Yeah fail a subject 3 times, you're fucked.

Fail more than 50% of your subjects in a year, you're in trouble.

Ditto if you fail all subjects in a semester.

I failed a first year physics subject and i looked it up , if you fail the second time you have to show just cause like someone says and only if you show that can you repeat the subject again.

Do they fail people much?

I s'pose it depends on the faculty, anyone know what kind of percentages of people they fail?

It depends on the subject. For accounting 1A, the fail rate is apparently close to 30%. For services marketing, the fail rate will be around 3-5%. For an engineering subject (forgot which one) the failure rate is apparently close to 50%, whilst for another engineering subject its around 5%. So basically it will vary.

Damn.

Know anything about first year maths & science subjects?
Yep, MATH1001 and 1002 have a 84% and 82% failure rate, respectively

eep!

I do 1011, do as many people fail that?

84% is nuts. Does everyone just do it again?

No, for 1011 its 80%, which is ok...

I'm also joking. The failure rate is obviously not that high. Don't concentrate on the number of people who fail. It's insignificant. Simply concentrate on passing, or exceeding a pass. If you do all the necessary work, you won't fail.
