While procrastinating i've made a little flowchart for the basic process of the HSC system. Let me know if anything is wrong...

i dont like that system, but at least it rids of the possibility of failing based on one exam and things... and makes scaling ok...

woodnt those that are coming first in all school assessments now just be like 'ah... not gonna study ill let everyoen else get the marks for me"

No because although you will get the highest exam mark as your moderated assessment mark, how the HSC mark is calculated is through your HSC exam result + your moderated assessment mark and divided by 2 to get the average.

So if a person coming 1st in all subjects decides to bludge the HSC and get 50/100 for his Exam and the highest mark is 90/100. Then That person will have his HSC mark as (90 + 50) / 2 = 70.

which isn't very good.

just one more question (I promise!)

when scaling your marks (because it takes into account difficulty) does it compare your internal mark against

a) the mark you get yourself in the hsc external exam
or
b) the aligned mark you get in the hsc external exam based on rank?

Difficulty of the exam isn't taken into consideration.

It's the performance of the candidture that determines how a subject scales. Typically, a subject in which a lot of students perform well will result in good scaling such as Mathematics Extension 2.

I'm not sure if I fully understand your questions but here goes.

The mark you get at school means absolutely nothing. The only thing that counts is the relative difference between students and the ranking.

Those Internal marks you get at school undergo moderation by the Board of Studies and is adjusted to the appropiate aligned HSC exam mark that particular rank received.

What the UAC does is take the raw average of your moderated assessment mark + your exam mark (Raw HSC mark) and scales that. The aggregate of the best 8 units + 2 units of english is added and your UAI determined.

Nah, I find explaining this over and over quite entertaining :)

Those it is true that if people read the sticky's it will answer almost all their questions.

rage, not sure if i fully understand, in fact now im getting worried, dat no matter how much work n effort i put into the external now is gonna be pointless.

say
English (standard) = 60 23/70
Gen Maths = 63 25/74
Business = 65 39/78
Ancient Hist = 67 20/35
IT : Multimedia = 92 4/21

say in english, maths, business & ancient hist, i beat 15 people who are ranked higher den me at skewl in the HSC external, I will get pulled up a big bit?

2nd question, i don't kno how this works out, but my friend was jus tryin to explain sumthin last nite, but the msg dat i seemed to understand is dat u cant do worst then u already are,u can only do better? hence, i cant get much worst den the ranks i already have & marks, but if i work my ass off for the external , i can overtake ppl n gain more marks?

3rd question, atm, im ranked 39/78 in business, and i have a mark of 65, but say in the external i get a mark of 98, does dat mean i take the 39th person's mark and the 1st person takes my mark instead?
dats kinda ridiculous aint it?

Question 1

Theoretically you do not get pulled up. When they say "pulled up" they probably mean that since they take the average of your internal assessment and HSC external, getting a higher external will result in a high average.

Your internal will always be that whatever rank you are at school, the exam mark that corresponds to that rank will become your moderated assessment mark

Question 1

What do you mean by can't do as worse as you are? If you are ranked poorly, the result will most likely be a poor assessment mark.

Normally when the HSC is nearing, more effort is put into study because you don't have the 6 hours of school in the way and you have covered everything. So technically people do better.

But that isn't always the case.

Question 3

In terms of your Internal assessment yes that is the case.

Your 98/100 will remain the same for your HSC exam and something similar (but not equal) to the 39th highest mark will become your moderated assessment.

Let's say that the 39th highest is somewhere around 70/100.

Your HSC Mark is then calculated with (98 + 70) / 2 = 84

The reason for using this system of ranking is because you can't compare the marks you recieve at school amongst the state. It would be unfair. The HSC exam is the only common exam throughout the state and thus and be used to measure performance. So it's not really ridiculous.

It would only affect you if they performed even worse in the exam (relative to you) than they have already.

Ah, it's all too confusing for me. I have read basically this whole forum and I'm still unsure! I am ranked first in all my classes and got pretty good assessment marks as far as I know. In most of my classes there is a pretty big gap between myself and the person who came second.

From what I gather, I therefore need to come first in all my exams and need to get better marks than my assessment marks if I want to do well. Is that right? I think I will come first in all my exams but what's the relevance?

My subjects are also relatively easy (standard english, general maths, design and technology, art and biology) so I don't know if this has any bearing on my marks. Can anyone shed some light on this?

I really don't know what to expect so I'm just sort of hoping for the best.
