I have to create an experiment that shows how the Surface Area : Volume ratio affects the rate of diffusion. But i can't seem to come up with an idea. Has anyone else done a similar experiment and could possibly help? I would really appreciate it =).

haha yeh i did dat experiment in yr 11 during biology class.
I used agar jelly, cut em up into different dimensions (mm):
30x30x30 , 20x20x20 , 10x10x10
put each into a beaker wif sulfuric acid and just watch the cube go clear.
of course the smaller cube, the larger the surface area to volume ratio, and thus a faster rate of diffusion.
Hope it helps.

Thankyou for that. Though i did a similar one in class. I now have to make up a different experiemt to show similar results.

Well, a simple experiment that I can think of is to use those Berrcoca (sp?) pills which dissolves in water. You can have a original pill representing one SA:V ratio, and then another pill cut up into 4 pieces representing a higher SA:V ratio, and then a third pill cut up into 8 pieces representing the highest SA:V ratio. You place all three lots into different glasses of equal volume of water and time how long does it take for the water to dissolve all of the solids in each glass.

The above link is also an experiment using jelly to determine the affects of SA:V ratio.

POTATOES!!!! :D
you just cut differnt sized cubes eg 2 cm x2cm x 2cm then place it in hydrogen peroxide( i think ..) then repeat but cut the cubes in half etc
