hey,
Has anyone here performed the experiment of measuring acceleration due to gravity by using Atwood's machine i.e. the pulley thing.

If so can you plz tell me the procedures that need to be employed to reduce errors, the variables involved and any hazards in the experimental procedure. :):):)

thanks in advance

well to reduce errors
you can make the string length longer .. so ur timing can be more accurate
reduce the friction between the string and pulley

and for safety hazards .. ?? i dun think there is any real safety hazards
but u can probably get away, with making up some bs ??
eg .. make sure u wear safety glasses ... [Insert bs here]

yeah.. i did this experiment a while bak so this is off the top of my head

Make sure you repeat the experiment a number of times...
Make sure pulleys are properly *lubed* so that there is no resistance to the turn motion...
Possibly string length and masses are sum variables...

N/A
Also the surface area of the mass is a variable, well the surface area mass ratio. The larger the surface area the greater the drag. The drag is then opposing the force (higher mass, higher force while drag remains "constant").

Reduce error - make sure string is longer, make swing angle less than 10 degrees, make sure it swings along one plane only.
Independant variable - length
Dependant variable - time

One more thing

I want to know if i should write the variables, errors and hazards in the discussion
and write how to reduce the errors in the conclusion.

Did you also do the pendulum prac.? Becuase its kind of weird how you have to do both.
Our teacher is making us do 3 experiments on measuring acceleration due to gravity.

so i picked
-atwood's machine
-simple pendulum
-solid pendulum (can't find any info on this one so i am thinking of doing the water experiment but don't know the proper name of this experiment.)

hey...we have to do three experiments too...and i'm doing
- simple pendulum
- atwood's machine
- water drip

i considered doing solid pendulum but didn't find anything on it so i changed to water drip.
