Organising - Think about how the data is arranged and howit is represented within the system. For example if its a spreadsheet then the data is arranged into a 2 dimensional grid of cells where each cell represents the data (or formulas) as numbers, or text...

Analysing - Think about the processes that make the data understandable for humans. In a DSS these are likely to be the primary processes that provide information. For example in a spreadsheet the data is analysed to create summaries that can be displayed as charts.

Processing - Think about processes that alter the data. For example editing cells...

Obviously you need to choose more specific examples for the scenario given. (I presume a scenario was given in the question).

Deciding which university degree to apply for can be a long and frustrating process.

Kim and Hendra have developed a Decision Support System (DSS) that will assist their fellow Year 11 and Year 12 students identify university degrees that suit their needs and abilities.

Kim and Hendra have used the following decision criteria:

  • The student's area of interest
  • The Universities Admission Index (UAI) the student expects to obtain
  • Whether the student wants to study at a local university
  • Whether a small or large university is preferred

The information for the system was collected from university websites and includes degree name, degree detail, the UAI required for each degree in the previous year, and the university location, size and distance from Kim and Hendra's high school.

hmmm this is what i would say:
depending on the dss, you could discuss it in the form of a database or a spreadsheet.

organising in databases- organized into fields (degree name, degree detail, the UAI required for each degree in the previous year, and the university location, size and distance from Kim and Hendra's high school.)

analysing- queries could be asked using sql (structured query lanuguage) if they type in a large uni they want to go to it will come up with those of they could type in their course name and the courses they would be able to do would come up

processing for databases- choosing what fields to put in...im not sure about that one

spreadsheets
organising- info in organised in columns and rows (both databases and spreadsheets are easy to read off) labels would be used to put a heading on the field eg. required UAI last year
analysing- what if analysis (changing the variables to observe the results) goal seeking (type in the UAI they think they will get and it will come up with what they can do)
processing- showing different forms for different reasons

im not sure about processing for either sorry

The Decision Support System in this instance would use a forward chaining inference engine....

Organising:Once the preliminary investigation is complete, the data should be organised into a database with a set of fields (degree name, degree details, the uai required for each degree in the previous year,university location, boolean field for university size small/large and distance), for the raw data a expert system shell would be used to have a consistent inteface, the expert (in this case, mostly the career advisor) would work with the engineers (kim and hendra).

Analysing:Then the forward inference engine can then use IF/Then statements to determine what University Course is best suited.

Processing:It should then be formatted to be read by the user.


Man this is so hard.....

The processing information process, according to the syllabus, has to alter the data in some way. Formatting it nicely for the user does not alter the data, it is really an organising process.

You therefore need to think about processes that change the data, which I acknowledge is not so easy for this scenario...

Some things that could be classified as processing processes maybe:

- editing/updating the data held for a particular uni course.
- editing/updating data determining a student's criteria.
- the distance to the various universities could be calculated somehow using the location of the uni and the school.
- presumably the data collected from different unis will be in different formats, it needs to be altered to suit the organisation method used by the DSS.

Your various responses for organising and analysing are on the right track, however very specific examples that precisely relate to the scenario tend to attract higher marks. Maybe write your general response and back it up solidly with a specific example from the scenario.

(JRasnier: Your forward chaining response is good however you contradict this slightly by saying "...what University Course is best suited", implying a single course. Forward chaining is likely to produce a number of suitable courses).
