People have the right to do whatever the hell they like aslong as it does not impose on the rights of others, so of course im in favour of euthanasia.

Though i do think its important to remember a case a heard a while back of a women who supported euthansia in Australia and went on tv calling for support for legislation to legalise it, she was dieing and "uncurable" and wished to commit euthanasia . She has since made a miracle recovery and is no one of the biggest opposers of euthanasia.

Interesting case, though she wasnt terminally ill, she had an incurable illness (there is a subtle difference, i promise :) )

She did not have cancer (which would call for the great majority of euthanasia patients) but a twisted intestine, a very rare condition that somehow "cured itself". Very rare indeed.

I think it should be allowed. Keeping in mind that the person undersatnds it completly and has at least ... say, 1 month to think about it with treatement etc.

Utopian i never said that i know whats better for the person and that is was my decision i was simply just giving my opinion on the issue. Of course it wouldn't be up to me to think that i would know whats better for the person...i have never been put in that situation at all so i wouldn't know but i don't agree with euthanasia because it is playing god. Plus i was responding to what someone else said (i can't remember who but i think it was year11) about the fact that the person might not be in their right minds coz they are ill. So i definitly don't think i am being arrogant!

I think thats a pretty harsh thing to say about a mentally ill person. Its not about being "hopeless". Things can happen, such as a sudden change of heart. Killing yourself in certain "popular" ways can actually be harder than you think.

Suicide is technically illegal, but its one of those trivial laws. Its not a crime, just a terribly sad and distressing event for everyone involved.

If you survive attempted suicide, you won't necesarily be thrown into a mental hospital at all, a) the system cant cater for all attempted siocides in this way b) its not necessarily within the state's right to do this against a patients will
i just mean that if you really wanted to die ... you would be able to do so easily ... eg take a bottle of tablets type A and B ... jump of cliff (and if your still not dead then maybe your not meant to die) ... and a whole range of other things ... people who attempt suicide and fail indicates that they dont really want to die ... imo at least ...

the scariest thought i ever had, was lying in my bed 2 months agoin the middle of the day, saying to myself

" All you have to do is bury your face into the mattres and cover your head with pillows"

suicide takes courage if you ask me, despite the fact that you are running.

i think it can be compared to walking on a thin small plank but people somehow still manage to stay on the plank ... and yes i think it takes immense courage to extinguish one's life and go through with it ...

Should Euthanasia Be Legalised?

I was watching this documentary on euthanasia and found the practices quite scary. Then there was one part where a few of its advocates were working to make it legalised here . I have created this thread see if others think it should/should not be legalised and why?

Re: Should euthanasia be legalised?

No it shouldn't be. There are piratical reasons like how old people who feel they are a burden on their family may feel 'obligated' to opt for euthanasia. But there are also more abstract reasons like how it would be yet another blow against the sanctity of life and breaking another taboo etc.

Re: Should euthanasia be legalised?

Meh. I dthink that's a bit of a doomsday scenario myself, more of an excuse than a realistic reason as to why it shouldn't be legalised. The way I see it, it's outrageous to suggest that the legalisation of such an act would result in people flipping switches at the whim of a hat. The pros for legalising it, creating peaceful death for those in terribly painful terminal diseases, by far outweigh these absurd cons.

I'm for legalising it only in the most extreme of circumstances.
That and lots and lots and lots of red tape, tests, whatever, before you can actually do it.

Yep, basically.

Who would decide on these circumstances? Our parliament? A bunch of beaurecrats? Doctors? Can these circumstances be amended for individual cases?
Our parliament through the advice of doctors / specialists on the basis of what an informed population of Australia wants.

Wrist + Blade.
We're generally talking about very sick people here and we're also after proven, reliable ways for people to kill themselves that to our understanding will not cause pain.
