Hrm, would it make much of a difference if I said that the low school ranking was due to the fairly large cohort (1200 exams sat), the majority of whom are doing rather poorly, but most of them are not in the subjects I do.

What I mean by this is that on the whole the cohort of my subjects preforms much better than the rest of the year 12 cohort.

So how much of a difference would this make?
