Bit confused with the equity/equality part. Can anyone clarify it in layman's terms? Please.

Thanks.

Equity
Equity is a correction of justice where the law does not take individual circumstances into account. I.e. Each case has to be judged on its own merits. Also can be expanded further to the origins of equity.
Equality
Equal treatment of all people. Today the concept of equality is in all areas of life. E.g. Anti-discrimination laws and social security.

I thought equity was where it does take individual circumstances. If not, then what exactly is meant by "judged on its own merits" because that sounds like individual circumstances are taken into account.

Judge on its own merits basically means it does take individual circumstances. Same thing.

Edit: as to origins of equity just basically mean you should look up where it originated from because it sometimes come up in hsc e.g. last year. From memories the concept of equity derived from the Chancellor's Court.
