When using quotes in essays, can we change them a bit to make them gramatically correct, or do we have to use the exact quote?

Thanks!

If you're going to change them you have to use brackets ==> []

eg Original quote "I'm hungry"

In sentence: She said "[she's] hungry"

At least, that's how I've been told to do it. Oo

Yeah, that's right, the square brackets.

Your quote doesn't have to be exact if your quoting from a novel (Is the teacher really going to look through the novel to see if it is right?). But if it is something like question 1 in the Area of Study Paper you should quote word for word.

I prefer using square brackets. :p
But I usually try to word my sentences around the quote.....and when I don't remember the quote, I just paraphrase it, but you generally should remember the quote. :)
