In all this bitching, moaning and whinging - I ask myself, what purpose does it serve?

I'm doing pretty shit in English at the moment, I hate the subject, as the OP says - I find it "useless".

But in the grand scheme of things, English has pretty much aided in other skills which I'll use in the future, essays - reports - speeches etc. etc.

Hate it or love it, it's not going away, bare with it.
So the writting of essays, reports and speeches will aid you in the future.

Fair point.

So why dont we write essays about relevant things? Why powerplay? Why journeys?

Why cant we write about things that will aid us later?

I feel like an utter twat studying things of no relevance and NO INTEREST to me. Everything else is my choice, and hence I'm interested.

But in saying this - you're right - hate it or love it..

I agree completely.

I think the syllabus should focus more on relevant interests and current affairs, rather than analysis of useless shit like Ted Hughes poems (unless of course, people are interested in it?)

English is the only subject I'm never stressed over.
And the English classroom we have is the warmest because it get the most sun all day, and has nifty views of the harbour.

So, english is win, mostly.

why on earth did you choose that post to quote??

also, im pretty sure coleridge was on opium, not drunk.
read over my other posts. the content is not what matters...
We've moved on from that point, but all of Coleridge's buddies were on opium too. Isn't it nice that literary classics are formed that way?

But still, I love English... :)

Well for starters, you could establish physical journeys as embodying the most transcendental elements of the continuous journeying process, as a result of its tangible qualities (ability to effect change in reality). The permanent nexus between the physical transition and metaphysical elevation of human capacities broadly summarises the concept.

wow thats really deep, but to me personally it sounds like a load of poo.
like reaaaaallllly.
how is this ever meant to help us in life? why does english (this type of english not the actual language) really matter in the world?
like geeeeez!
anyone agree?
but bobness, good on you, that was really - wow. very deep and very amazing you can say things like that...

I'm never stressed about English til about 1 hour before the assessment, at which point I stress for a few minutes, think about all the study I should have done, realise that it's too late now and then become mostly relaxed again...

My English class also looks over Darling Harbour, which isn't quite as nice as Sydney Harbour proper, but it's still nice when I just sit in class looking outside:rolleyes:

i dunno about a waste of life. but i really wish it was more an englishourse instead of a literature course. id blitz it if it was a giant spelling test or something. instead of all this poetry analysis.

*Your passion :)

Anyway... he was giving [a potentially too wordy, but well intentioned and received] advice to the starter of this thread on creative writing, so good on him, especially since he's a tutor and people pay him for that type of advice usually.

...this may be an example of somebody who conforms to some of your (the unknown plural, that is... ) "you don't like English, you are a retard, you should drop out" posts. I've gotta agree with you on that one.

Sorry for all english lovers/teachers involved in this conversation but i would love to know what occupation in the world requires 'excellent module C essay writer!' on resume's. I know im only doing Advanced English so that i can pass it decently enough along with Mathematics to become a pilot after school but wow they put and INFINITE amount of pressure in students to completely ace every essay because if you don't you will never succedd in life without that essay rite!

I think the format of HSC English should change. But English should definitely still be a compulsory UAI-counting subject.
