Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone who has previously written an essay for the prelim exam for extension English would be able to help me determine the question that I will have to write about.

Here is some information:

The module is Texts, culture, and values.

My two texts are The Handmaid's Tale and Blade Runner (the film) 1982

My teacher told me that it would start with To what extent...

The words culture and context are also in question. I think it will state which one is either more effective or something, I'm not sure.

I also believe that the question will end in "understanding the value of a text?"

Btw culture and context in terms of the texts and the essay mean this -

Culture
Values of society at the time
Language of the time
Science fiction (an example of a popular genre)

Context
What's happened - events, political + social leading up to the creation of the text.

1980s (when both texts were made)
- emergence + reliance on technology
- gender roles + rights

Anything will be appreciated
Thank you.

Well I feel like it'd be easier to determine what the question could be if you had practice questions you were given by teachers, and also it's REALLY not useful to predict the question beforehand because in the future it could kind of be anything and you will just have to adapt your essay to the question. But from the kind of questions I've been given, I would probably guess it'll be something similar to "To what extent does culture/context shape your understanding of the value of a text" or something but different schools give different kinds of questions so.

just go in with some general prepared thesis statements and arguments for your texts. try and find past questions that are similar to practice writing responses to. Prepare for a comparative in case, it may not necessarily be one though. make sure you have an understanding of why the culture/context provides value and how it influences the texts construction, if one is stronger than the other etc and the different ways this is represented. Link to why we value the text, why is it enduring and resonant for modern audiences today, how do the themes and values of the composers context transcend and reflect our own concerns
