Facepalm

Bipolar, depressed teen thinks it is a good idea to marry boyfriend of 5 months

It's like some horrible neighbours episode

Edit for honesty: BPD does not necessarily equal bipolar

Google says 'borderline personality disorder', which doesn't seem much more favourable.

Either way, getting engaged to someone you've been with 5 months is p retarded

meh.

Edit: marriage in today's society is more a less a piece of paper. And living together for two years, now, you're effectively treated as a married couple (just an unrelated fact I'd throw in). So, honestly? I don't see what the big deal is. I love my fiance more than I can put into words. We both support each other, and care for each other, better than any one else. We want to spend the rest of our lives together. You know, love...We're going to get married in a few years, and if you guys don't like it, then that is your issue. This is the reality of it though.

Marriage is something thats very highly entrenched in the law, and can have a lot of consequences if a breakdown ever happens, due to the many ties that must be severed between the two of you.

Plus you keep saying things like "marriage is just a piece of paper", and if so then why get married if you really love each other? You shouldnt need to prove it with a "piece of paper"...

Why go through such an arduous and binding process if you think it is merely for appearances?

:) well, he asked me, and if he wants me to marry him, then I shall!
I, honestly, don't feel the need to be married. It wouldn't bother me one bit if he rang me now and told me he didn't want to get married, or wanted to prolong it. That doesn't bother me at all.

I AGREE. I've been with someone for years, I still think an engagement is a massive step, a good one, but not to be taken lightly.

No, no, no. That's the attitude you're going into it with? Do u realise what marriage entails once its official? Pretty sure it is meant to be mutual....

It is mutual. I want to get married to him. But I can live without.

...anyhow, we're stealing this thread from the OP. Just pm if you would like to debate anymore.

Oh no, I dont want to debate it. You're just a random internet person to me, someone I'll most likely never meet. But I'm just concerned you're rushing into it.

I appreciate everyone's concern. Yes Shane, even yours. (Deny that you don't care all that you want, I still appreciate your input).

I am competent. I have reason and logic. Contrary to some bosers belief. But if you met me, or were in my shoes, I'm sure you'd do the same thing. Thanks evry1.

So what if she wants to marry him? It's her choice in the end, I mean she's probably mature enough to decide for herself. Besides, she's giving it more than two years before actually getting married isn't she? Surely that's more than enough time?

You can't ridicule her for wanting to get married because of her BPD and depression, I mean he'd be giving her the support she needs which is reason enough to get married. I suppose you just have to believe that she's doing the right thing, instead of instantly criticising her.

The stigma around BPD is rather shit imo, i was misdiagnosed with it in primary school and the school placed me in a "special" class.

Seriously, the stigma is fucked up.

It is.

But in primary school??? Wth??? That's really harsh. There's a lot of controversy that surrounds in diagnosing a person with BPD whos under 18. I don't know how they could have diagnosed you at such a young age.
And BPD does not make you incompetent? I'm top of almost all of my classes. I read for the special ed HSC'ers. :(
