Electric motor assignment- HELP PLEASE (1 Viewer)

So, I have to build an electric motor for my Physics assignment.

I found directions for one here:

It uses a battery, therefore it is a DC motor right?

Yet it requires no commutator. Which is fine, except I don't really understand why, and I'd like to know so if my teacher asks me "Where's the commutator" (which he may well) I can explain it in my report.

it does have a commutator.. its just not as obvious..

on page 11 it says "Since the arms of the coil only have insulation on one half". i.e. meaning it will only conduct electricity through the wire every 180degrees.

Thats very basic. Personally I'd attempt something a bit harder/more challenging.

What's wrong with basic? I always thought basic is good. Its easier and shows you understand the concepts. Why make it harder than it needs to be.
