I'm considering about taking ECOS2201 (Competition and strategy) next semester but it prohibits ECOS3005 (Industrial organisation) which I also want to take. Which one of them is better to take seeing as I have to take at least three ECOS3XXX subjects?

Also considering ECOS3003 (Hierarchies, firms, incentives), ECOS3011 (Public finance), ECOS3015/ECOS3012/ECOS3006

got the exact same question. they look exactly the same and are prohibitions.

i asked someone who did 3005 and said the lecturer was solid and the course was also good

* Also wondering if anyone has any advice for ECOS2902 vs ECOS2002. I've heard that it is easier to get higher marks in ECOS2902 than ECOS2002?

have heard the exact opposite

i emailed the 2901 person about 2001 vs 2901 and he said maybe for the top students theyd do about the same in both, otherwise yes 2901 is harder. i assume the same would apply for macro

I've seen the 2901 content and it is quite a bit more complex. But I've heard that 2902 has more substantive content and less fluff than 2002, so may be easier to get a higher mark in?

ive never heard of adv/hons units being easier than the normal since scaling was removed - wouldnt think its the case for macro either

I haven't taken either - but I doubt it would matter too much. Everyone who is capable of doing Honours that has taken econ electives has found them on the whole to be quite easy.

Industrial Organisation is an Honours level subject as well (although obviously much harder at Honours level). So it might have some useful externalities in that it will allow you to gauge your interest in the subject if you intend on doing Honours - but this is quite a minimal benefit.

I doubt it's easier to get a higher mark in ECOS2002 compared to ECOS2902. That said, ECOS2902 is probably the easiest pre-Honours level subject - so it's not hard to get a high mark in it at all if you know what you're doing. There is a much larger difference between the difficulty of 2001 vs 2901 compared to 2002 vs 2902. Even so, the non-Honours courses would still be easier.

Just to confirm this - I've never experienced any scaling in any pre-Honours units. So no compensation for doing the pre-Honours units.

2903 exams had bonus marks this year, if that counts as scaling haha.
Yeah Don always does that - but you still get your raw mark (just with the possible 5 bonus marks included). For me there was actually scaling in ECMT2110/2150 as well - but that's not strictly a pre-Honours unit.
