Describe the types of unemployment and discuss the impact of the changing nature of employment in the Australian economy

This is an essay question- for the second part of the question, I am really stuck on finding information regarding outsourcing, casualisation, contracting, the textbook just states that business outsource as its flexible etc and we need stats as well.

is there other stuff I can talk about for changing nature of employment

what types of stats can I use- I cant find any :((

I have tried researching but cannot find anything

I think outsourcing and contracting are good things to talk about in response to this question.

The effect outsourcing has on the Australian economy can be detrimental (particularly when outsourcing to companies overseas). Offshore outsourcing results in less employment from the home country (Australia), leading to things like less tax being paid by the workforce to the government.

I was also thinking about the casualisation of the workforce and a decrease in the number of permanent employees (mainly full-time). Perhaps you could elaborate on the effect that the increase of casual employees (with less stable employment) can have on the Australian economy as opposed to having more full-time employees (with more stable employment)?

You should check whether this concept would be something relevant/covered under the HSC Economics syllabus prior to using it in your response as I haven't done Economics.

Outsourcing to foreign companies causes a rise in unemployment, which is caused by the reduced number of jobs. Those are the jobs that were given to the foreign company over Australian employees. A rise in unemployment can cause draining of knowledge, meaning knowledge and innovation capabilities in a particular field/industry/sector becomes redundant, because the positions that require this knowledge were made redundant as they have already been outsourced. This could give other countries the opportunity to capitalise on this weak spot of the Australian economy, potentially causing further detriment to the Australian economy resulting from increased international competition.

Contracting and casual employment have similar aspects, such as both lacking leave entitlements and both not offering highly secure employment, as opposed to permanent (full-time and part-time) employment. In terms of security, when a contract ends, the person is no longer employed, and securing another contract may be a difficult process and may also require time, meaning an individual could potentially be unemployed for a considerable period of time until they secure a new contract. With casual employment, there are no set/regular hours which the employee must work each week, unlike permanent employment, meaning a casual employee may be asked to work during one week and may not be asked to work the week after. There cannot be a stable economy that is based on increasing levels of casual employment and contracting. One of the main problems with such employment is that paying tax becomes a problem, because the government would no longer be properly funded (i.e. less money going into it as tax), leading to a decreased ability to develop and advance the country (e.g. funding projects).
