Just preparing my discussion question "talk" that I have due for Wednesday, but since the PASS times before then clash with my lectures, I can't ask questions there so I don't really have anywhere else to turn to but here. :) (I forgot the name of my tutor.. doh!)....

Anyway, my discussion question is:

What are the eco. justifications for interference in free trade? What are the forms of protection? Which groups are winners and losers.

Now the Microeconomics textbook is fairly vague on these questions, and i'm finding that my HSC notes are far more helpful. Is this little outline for the first 2 parts what I should be doing?

Justifications for interference
Revenue
Infant industry argument
Prevention of dumping
Protection of domestic employment
Defence and self-sufficiency
Environment
Exploitation

Methods of protection
Voluntary export restraints
Tariff
Subsidies
Quotas
Local Content Rules
Export Incentives
Embargoes, etc

Ta, but the question specifically says "what are the winners and losers from such intervention"... so does htat mean we're only supposed to be talking about the winners and losers when protection is in place or the opposite?

here are some handy hints

they don't expect much of you from the question, what i mean by that is, all they want from you is infromation from the textbook provided and ontop of that some thoughts of your own
Do not make this into a long boring speech...although it will become that way. This is a DISCUSSION which means you are suppose to have an interaction with the class and engage in conversations

You don't have to do the lame "good morning TUTOR NAME and fellow students..." i have only ever seen one person do that in a class of errr ~18 people. Just say "good morning/afternoon" and get on with it!

Don't go over time! There are some tutors who would stop you dead on that second once the time is over. Also try to do it like you are giving a lecture, don't read from palm cards...don't read at all if you can help it! Try and do it all from your memory just be looking at dot points.

Finally back to your question, if the question saids winner and looser which it clearly does, then yes you will have to do it for both topics which you are going to talk about! Which is why I said don't go over-board and just get the basics mentioned in the textbook.

I don't think there is supposed to be a discussion forum for Micro1. There wasn't when I did it. The only subjects that I have had that had a forum were Accounting 1a, 1b and one online GenEd.

I am a PASS leader. I'm also not supposed to talk much about the discussion questions. So if you PM me asking about it then I'll just reply with "Ask your tutor".

<I've been asked not to comment on the discussion questions at all so I've removed my previous statement>

I got 76, so don't ask me! :)

I think you have to get used to stating the obvious. I hate doing that so I tend to be penalised for it. Even when I know the answer to something.

it's not about the marks

you can have someone getting 100/100, but if they cannot convey the message across to students then it is pointless
communication skills is every bit greater than getting a good mark

Exactly. If you're a genius, but very shy, you won't make a very good teacher.

timmy: you'll be fine, your marks show you have a good work ethic - the subject content will be easy for you compared to acct1b
