Doing the HSC with 13 units? (1 Viewer)

Is anyone considering doing the HSC with 13 units? I'm not sure about other schools and this may be a stupid question if doing 13 units is the norm but not many people do this in my school as it is considered too large a workload to cope with but I honestly do not know what to drop. My year adviser recommended to go through the first round of assessments and then make a decision but I received really unprecedented results doing quite badly in the subject that I did the best in for prelims and one that I have never considered dropping. Basically I'm kind of stuck at the moment, is anyone else in a similar situation and considering going ahead with 13?

I was on 14 but dropped maths after year 11. Even on 12 units (which is the max one should really consider), the workload was still much especially if you are gunning for high marks. Specialising in fewer subjects is much better, and you will come to thank yourself come assessment and exam times. You could get away with 13, but that'd mean a helluva lot of perseverance.

I did 14 and I did fine. You just need to manage your time well.

I did 14, although I accelerated 2. I had friends who did 14 in the one year though and they said it wasn't that bad.

Depends on what subjects you're doing and which ones you didn't do so well in, but I would drop down to 11 (or 12)
And with 11 I had so many free periods last term/timetable is changing you might have scattered frees instead of your Monday arvo block

Yeah that block doesn't exist anymore I'm pretty sure, but you know what my issue is

I did 13, and I got told by everyone, my friends my teachers, everyone that I'm doing too much.
But I knew that I'd rather have a heavy load and be safe rather than let one unit bring my ATAR down.

However, half of my subjects were easy (SOR2, CAFS compared to CHEM AND EXT 1) hence why it was easier to handle.

I honestly suggest that you make the decision yourself. Do YOU think you can handle it?
At one point, my teacher was adamant that I drop chem because I was doing poorly and he hated me having 13 units, yet to his surprise, I kept it, and got a Band 5 for it.

Take a few days to list the pros and cons and go with your gut instinct!

No, it's something called wasted effort... that time and effort doing the extra 2 units (or 1 unit) can be placed into your other subjects. But as shadow said, you gotta have good time management - but honestly having gone through hsc with 10 units, any more would've ruined everything (for me)

I did 14 and I liked all my subjects. I know someone doing 15 who likes all their subjects.

Plus, even if I dropped down to 12 - who says my newfound time will be spent studying my other subjects anyway? I think I'd be better off taking more subjects rather than spending two more hours lounging about doing nothing.

I'll offer a counter case, I'm pretty glad I had 12 units as I wouldn't have picked the two that didn't count at the time I was dropping subs (did 13 prelim, dropped a prelim sub and picked up EX2 yr 12 for 12).

I know many people who did 13 units throughout the HSC (sister, friends etc.) and for some people it was good because they were relatively equal in their subs and didn't know what would count. (My sister would have picked her 3 units that didn't count as her 3 best lol).

It all comes down to time management-and of course, I'd rather you keep the 13 units for 1st term if you aren't sure what to drop, nothing worse than subject drop regret.

Personally, i'm still doing 12, i'm doinng IT Vet, which for me, i could sit the HSC and pull an 85 right now, 90 if i was on my game. I don't do classwork in that class, it's moreso a relaxation from all the stress. So really, i'm doing 10 units, with the extra two incase i flunk maths/chem -.-

Do whatever you feel comfortable with, I was in the same position last year except I was going in with 15, obviously I dropped a subject but I kept 13 units until the end of my HSC. Although it is difficult, it can definately be done.

If your ranks are erratic and vastly different then you should reconsider and think about dropping, however if you are dedicated enough and work consistently there is nothing that will stop you from doing well. At the end of the day the opinions on this forum are simply advice and should not be considered gospel by any means. Do what you want and what you think you can handle, just make sure you have no regrets because I certainly don't
