Ah, someone who can see the truth of both camps. Thank you for your most likely more balanced response than the rest of ours. I honesty appreciate it. Most of what has been said, as stated by Lynn, was out of anger that someone who thinks Maths is so great (and I have nothing against Maths. I rather enjoy it.) and says that what we've done over twelve-ish months is a stupid waste of time.

I do believe that there are a lot of posers in English Ext 2, and it seems that they use postmodernism as a way to gain marks rather than writing something they truly care about (this is based on the Showcase and every crap Ext 2 story I've read, such as what my teacher handed out, though he didn't necessarily like them either). The problem is sure to go across all genres and styles, but the bottom line is a lot of people here are passionate about their work.

Linking to the Advanced and Extension 1 courses is not in the syllabus, though it seems to be an unwritten rule. I'd make at least one link in your Reflection Statement to be safe.

Yup, just do this! They say you should build on the skills learned in prelim/adv/ext 1, and so basically you can just talk about ways of thinking, deconstructing texts, yada yada yada, theres your link, and it doesn't limit what you've written at all

I've been doing both 4U English and 4U Maths for about a term (class of '05)...

So far, I'd say that both have their appeal... I'm finding 4U Maths stimulating, but 4U English is leaving me somewhat in the cold... (but that could be because I'm about 1 month behind with my journal =P), though it's good because of the freedom it offers.

I'd say that both 4U subjects have their merits...

But a big FUCK YOU to the wankers who thought up 'The Journey'.

This is going to be completely incoherent but I dont care. Screw being diplomatic. Fuck you. As for "anyone can throw together a poem" you have no idea what you're talking about and i'd like to see you try to just "throw together a poem" and get a fucking decent mark. Im angry tonight and this post is my punchingbag, if I knew you, you would be too. Fuck you again for good measure.

Yes, you are biased. I think it is a far harder skill to complete a major work, one which both satisfies academic as well as personal standards.

Sorry if I'm sounding like the pedant I am, but it's actually a written rule.
In the syllabus.
"This module requires students to work independently to plan and complete a Major Work in the form of an extended composition. It allows students to select an area of personal interest from their specialised study of English and develop their work in this area to a level of distinction."

The sheer ignorance of some people is just gobsmacking. I hate when people ask if there is an exam for EE2 and, when met with a: "No, it's a major work", they brush it off like THEY could do it. I don't think so. I don't think people who aren't undertaking EE2 realise the YEAR of hard work, research, drafting, editing, composing, refining, linking, more research, writing, documenting and reflecting that goes into a major work. CHRIST! I did a critical response and spent SO LONG slaving over that to produce a quality product. You know, EE2ers AREN'T joking when they say their major work is like their baby for the year.

OH. And...

Fucking ignoramus.

I do ext. 2 maths and ext. 2 English... So i'm experienced in both i guess...

For extension 2 english i've (so far) ten various books including studies on critical theory, books on crime fiction as a genre and works like Arcadia and done a full analysis of it in terms of themes, genre, form and the arbitary literary technique. And guess what?.... I haven't even handed my proposal up yet!!
The real work is yet to come... As people have said before in this thread your work is supposed to be the edification of literary perfection (or as close as you personally can get) I garuntee you that it is on par as far as work load goes with any other subject i study.


@trev Are you the same guy that was in the forum for 4u maths teasing the ones that asked *truly* sophisticated questions like for the proof of 1+1=2 etc?... If you are i've got to say you seem like a pretty negative person, if you apply yourself to your studies maybe you'll be able to compete with people like that...

i love both 4u english and 4u maths, they are pretty different but both help me to be who i am, i enjoy them and find them both a welcome challenge.

EE2 is NOT a test of your english skills

It's an EXPRESSION of your not only your english skills, but your creative, experimental and research skills.




Yeah, and I hate it when people thing subjective things are easy. I undertook 6 majorworks in year 12, all with journals, and I get incredibly angry when someone says that art or music etc are easy.

thats incredibly impressive, and I didnt do art or music but I agree that anyone who says they're easy are complete wankers. End of story.

Sorry to do this but I am going to have to generalise a little here. Trev I was studying 4u maths and ext 2 english and frankly if you want to get an E4 in either of them, they are going to take a lot more work than meets the eye. Instead of doing a psycho cram at the end of 4u maths, ext 2 English makes you work throught the year in a consistent and planned manner. Not "anyone" can do the course, you have to also be able to complete ext 1 English and Advanced English fairly well and be able to maintain top positions in both of those independant subjects. Ext 2 English really is a chance to escape the analytical and forever crushing "techniques" and explore the conventions of English and the power of the language to portray ideas or emotions you are experiencing at the time of composition. The freedom and vast depths of the subject make it extremely difficult to stick to one consise idea throughout the entire course and candidates will have to adjust and accept change to their piece. To say that there is no exam at the end is frankly an insult. There are assessment tasks and monitors to ensure you are doing the work not just throwing together a task... People who do higher levels of mathematics tend not to understand this (no offense in any way). Personally I think the exam at the end of each subject is pretty unjustified as you could just have a bad day and there goes a chunk of your HSC...
