Does HECS cover text book costs? Or do you need to buy them with your own money?
Also is it possible to just borrow the textbooks from the library or will there be a massive shortfall?

HECS doesn't cover textbook costs
And yes you can borrow them from the library

You have to purchase it with your own money.

Some books may be in more demand than others, and they can't really provide 200 (etc.) of the same textbook so there is the risk of having no textbook available. At the same time, there are plenty of resources available other than the prescribed textbook (unless there are things like specific tutorial questions from the textbook etc.) so you aren't restricted to just one book.

No iirc, HECS covers the cost of the degree. Textbook costs are all covered by the individual.

try to claim independence, but this will be hard if you live at home...

I thought this was no longer available from 1st January? Isn't it now a small loan where you also pay it back with HECS?
