I'm going to do architecture at UC, providing the UAI cutoff doesn't rise too much more. Where were you planning on doing it?

i would have preferred doing that, tafe students come out of their degree with drafting skills and it's heaps easy to get into uts through tafe. you'd be a more well rounded architect if yu went through tafe first and then went to uts

don't forget, for a b. arch degree its a full 6 years of study, on top of your 2/3 years at tafe. thats alot of study!! so i'd say try to do b. arch at uni then trasnfer to a different uni after first year if your not happy!!

You could start up your own company called Vanderlay Industries, as all architechts should.

i read in the good universities guide that the quality of the teaching at UTS for B.Arch is crap.. and past graduates have rated the course 1/5 stars... also the average starting salary is pretty crappy too - about $32,000 p/a... i always thought architects were payed well, considering they have to do 5 years of uni..

wow only $32k? but i guess it would be pretty hard to break into the industry. you know having to compete with all those who are already established!!!

me too... im not entirely sure which course to do.. according to UNSW its the Arch. Technology "Diploma"..
apparently its two years full time..

i dont know if its best to do IT at UWS for a year and try transfer to Arch at UTS instead of slugging out 2 years at Tafe..

f*ck they make it hard to study what you want...

architects are paid shit for the horus they have to put in and the dedication they've gotta put into their work..

that is why most post graduates bitch about the course, from personal experience it's because uts gives you a shitload of work and very little time to complete it, esp in the subject of architectural design. i do'nt mind it too much though, and i find the teaching standards not at all 1/5.

you do Architecture? cool.. my cousin is an Architect and he's loaded. He says where the money really is is in resource allocation (his job) and specialising..

when you finish will you go straight out into the industry and try your luck at one of these crappily-payed jobs or start your own thing individually? Apparently, if you want to at least make a living having your own business is the only way to go, unfortunately.. but i could be wrong..

well it's for every job, if you're good at your work you're obviously gonna get paid well. but in general there aren't many jobs for architects, and if there are, you do'nt get to expand your creative abilities very much..

i don't know, i'm actually thinking of transferring courses this year but if i were to stay, i'd do what everyone else at uts does. that is, get an office job at an architect's firm and [hopefully] stay on with them after graduation.

if your eally want to do architecture i would REALLY recommend that, if you do'nt have the UAi for uts.. it really is not a bad option to do it at Tafe first.

i went to arch straight outa school but there were about 20 (out of 60) students who graduated from the tafe course first. they are really really good at technical drawing and some of them at CAD too, and you'll find it helps in your design heaps.

however, if you DO do that, just make sure you do'nt become too technical and anal about design, cos a lot of tafe students aren't very free with their creativity cos they did a predominantly technical course

well, apparently i can only transfer to UNSW (only had a reply from them so far) after one year, and i have to get pretty good marks in IT at UWS (like high credits/distinctions) to have a high enough "entrance mark" to make it into Arch.

I haven't got a reply from TAFE as to whether i can start in semester two this year or have to wait until next year (im pretty sure i can apply in July for 2nd semester), but if i DO do the Diploma then i get an advanced standing of 1.5 years on the degree (which means after the two years of diploma i only have to do the degree for 3.5-4 years...

anyway, thanks for your help

Yo johnson, remember me? haha. Probably not.

I was thinking of doing Architecture before, but now I've changed my mind. I want to do Town Planning now. Does anybody know anybody who does a Town Planning course?

I, like whaddup, have a poor UAI and will not be accepted for the Town Planning course at UNSW.

I'm not sure whether I should do a related course at TAFE or whether I should do a lower cut off course at a University.

EDIT: Reynaldo, I thought did a course at UWS and was looking to transfer, but I was mistaken. So I guess you're in a similar position to me :p

haah yes i do remember you actually..

um at usyd's architecture course you can major in urban planning.. but th'ats only in the final two years of the course.

it'd probably be better to do it in Tafe and then go to usyd or unsw and do a postgrad town planning course..?
