Whilst trying to complete the rather confusing enrollment application, I , like all of you have been asked to put in your TFN, however I have been quite lazy as to getting my TFN since newsagents seem to no longer possess TFN application forms and so I must trek down to Bankstown at some point.

Could I perhaps put this in later , say after the deadline for accepting my offer i.e. complete everything else but not put in TFN yet?

EDIT: Also how does everyone exactly choose their subjects. For me I am extremely confused and dont even know where to begin. Did some people just randomly choose subjects. I'll be doing Commerce/Science

Well i wouldnt know much since Im also just a newbie. but I did my enrollment and chose my subjects ok.

Wel firstly your school should of asked you to apply to a TFN number in yr 10 2004 and you would of gotten a 9 digit number. Ask your parents if they got that letter or ask your school. ring the Tax department and ask them if they already have one for you, if not then you will have to book an appointment and go all the way to 100 Market Street Podium Level Centrepoint Sydney to get a TFN number and a certificate number to use during your 28 day wait.

Secondly, look up your course structure in the UNSW handbook (its a very handy thing I tell you) and see how many science electives, art electives and core subjects that you have. How many UOC do you need etc, then use the "class planner" (or something with that name on the Enrollment basket) and you will be given a very specific number of courses on a list for you too choose.. Choose them carefully as you will have to continue to do those electives in your SECOND year.

I heard that if you are going for your Honours or masters, then the results of your first year does not count (well in Psychology anyway) so don't stress too much if you completely loose it!

Also the electives pretty much do nothing more than serve as extra work and study, so it won't effect you much if you choose a subject that has nothing to do with your course but you can really do well in it and kick everyones ass.

So yeah, correct me if I'm wrong people. This is what Im told.

I don't yet have TFN for the application for hecs-help or whatever it is. You have until the census date to provide the uni with it (which for me i think is the 31st of march)...

i think u might be refering to the gened courses

as electives should reflect wat major u r planning

Well I had a look before and was stuck so I pressed planner function and I selected Finance (which is apparently what I want to major in for Commerce, not sure about Science) and then it showed me a premade subject choice however on the third option it asked me to check Cola to find out which maths course I should choose (basically all the subjects I'm going to do is Maths if I go with Mathematics in the Science degree.)

Would you suggest I just go with this premade subject choice?

And then i encountered another dilemma. It has been what, nearly 3 months since I actually did some maths and boy o boy, have I forgotten everything ( I did extension 2 maths, got 93 for e1maths, and 83 for e2maths (bit disappointing)) and I'm very sure I could do them maths Cola asks me during the HSC time and now I will have to revise some of the stuff because starting uni without knowing the product rule is pretty bad.

I wouldn't worry about it. Once you've started uni will get you going soon enough. Either that or you'll lag behind

Ok after reading abit of this topic I get the gist. You're applying to a degree which relies on HECS which needs a TFN.

Fortunately, the Govt is quite aware of some students being ill-advised by their Career Teachers, so all you have to do is to CALL Australian Taxation Office and tell them of their situation.

And I have now another problem. Whilst logging into MyUNSW today, I now find that there is no way I can put in my TFN which means I am unable to change the option where I either obtain HECS help or PAY UPFRONT 80% OF THE FEES BEFORE CONSENSUS DATE. AM I ABSOLUTELY SCREWED?

EDIT: who can I contact to fix all this up?

I'm a new student that had the tfn problem too.

I called up the ATO to book an appointment and tell them about my problem. Then go to the ATO website and print out the form. Fill it in and go to your ato appointment to submit your tfn form. They should then give you a certificate/receipt showing that you've applied. This is used if your number doesn't come in time.

I applied on the 9th Jan and got it in the mail on the 18th. To enrol i chose the 80% discount up front payment option then just enrolled. When you get your tfn just go back to myunsw, click on student profile and govt/hecs/fee forms and re do the form this time with your tfn.

Don't worry, High School Transition to University is extremely confusing, =p just goes to proving that UAI does not equal Total Human Intelligence

Anyway in answer to your question stephenchow, you cannot change your TFN if you can't find the option in MyUNSW Portal, what you will have to do is to either send an e-mail to:

enrol@unsw.edu.au OR Phone UNSW Enrolment services: [SIZE=-1]9385 1110

OR

Contact Student Central: [/SIZE] studentcentral@unsw.edu.au OR Phone: 9385 8500

Also, if the taxation office takes more than 2 weeks to create your TFN, then obviously the person you talked to - did not do anything at all. Some staff can speed up your TFN creation.

I cannot stress the importance of all First Year University students to quickly accept your offer + enrol.

theres still a good 2 months till you have to submit your TFN to UNSW.

just select the upfront payment and continue with the enrollment, then change it back once you do get your TFN.
