UTS started off as a technology college, with an already established niche and student base... it simply expanded to become a university, it was a natural progresion. You're right that it did compete against these universities, and it did well - however of course... it was right in the city still.
UTS now caters for far more than technology-based courses - it's ripped apart this "niche" and has a brilliant communications faculty, among a range of other things. It's not a simple expansion, it's the same expansion that UWS endured.

Being right in the city is a disadvantage. You've got more competition. Being in the western suburbs means that it is easier to find students, because it's the only uni that directly services them.

I mean you can have highly educated people whom perhaps have not put together a very good program for the subject.
It's why I like the Design course at UTS because the course structure was written by Simon Pemberton who is the Head of the Billy Blue School and President of the Australian Graphic Design Association. So it is also a major factor into building program success.

Seriously, UWS is one of the lamest uni's in Sydney. Look at the UAI's. No one wants to study there. Except people who didn't get into USyd or UNSW.

You guys keep telling yourselves that employers don't care about which uni you went to. Keep denying it. Keep telling yourselves that you're going to a good uni.

ladies and gentleman we have found ourselves a toolbox

UTS Started off with their niche in technology... it was already there - they already had a reputation as a school of technology, then they simply went on to offer university degrees. UWS was a whole bunch of different institutions that came together, with no niche and lower public-awareness of their existance.

Do you disagree with this? If not why are you still objecting my claims?

There are ups and downs of being in the city, I'm not willing to go either way on the issue as it's rather complicated in my estimation.

Being in the western suburbs means that it is easier to find students, because it's the only uni that directly services them.
Yea but on average, students from the western suburbs are not scoring as well as they leave highschool.

He's a really great guy, he helped me out alot with my career choice.

I was considering doing the course at billy blues, I started off with some email correspondence where he was really nice... then I went in for an interview and he explained to be that he didn't think design was what I should be doing - not that I was bad, just that he thought I had other interests that were more paramount. Quite frank/good advice considering that I was basically a cheque for 18 grand or something like that staring him in the face :/

Was this a special interview both of you were able to agree upon or was it because you were able to produce the required ten pieces of work? Billy Blue would have being won of my major considerations but for such large expenses, I wouldn't be able to afford it. You said you werent bad so what changed and what are you doing now?

It was the interview where i show him my pieces of work etc. Billy blue I would say is the best way to get into the design industry... but it is very expensive. UTS would have been my closest uni bet :)

That's actually my goal for this year and I will be doing all I can to make UTS next year; that being because of my course in Design.

Here I agree with you - UWS should focus on specialised areas, that have particular importance for Western Sydney. In this way I think the Medical school is a great step - as would be placing more emphasis on the criminology degree.
I think the Medical school is a double edge sword..
it will suck the life out of UWS if financial management isnt quality.. I dont know about the current state of finances but in the past it wasnt exactly regarded as very good.

it will bring higher recognition to UWS cos u are eligible for more funding types.. but to run courses costs heaps.. this is where UWS may need to consider having less places in undergraduate medical related fields or other courses.

At Newcastle, the courses are a nightmare for administrators because its not cheap to run.. Law costs about 9K per full-time student.. but Med/Dent are 23K per full-time student (CSP+govt funds). Both limit student to paying the same CSP and the govt does not fund much extra.

The cost is actually rising faster with new teaching methods and i have heard 26-27K as the more accurate figure.. deficit is usually made up by full-fee students or loss of resources.

Most importantly, will UWS receive the same Government funding for its Medical School as UNSW/USYD/UNQ/UADL?
they may get more than the established schools.. for education but not for research

for research they have to compete for NHMRC funding.. usually this goes to Go8 unis.. not the smaller ones

I thought the Go8 Universities were an independant institution - ie distanced from the Government. There's no doubt they're al prestigious though.
they are but they usually win all the research monies as they have significantly good research proposals.. and usually they have good researchers too..

its all based on merit.. and the Go8 stuff seems to have the better proposal

but for most ppl on BoS in undergrad this is not a concern..

It isnt really a disadvantage, im happy at UWS and i think that the environment is good for me, as i wasn't a study nerd at school. Alot of ppl shit on UWS but i think its pretty good if it has the field u wanna get into. Employers judge their employees on their talent and capabiltiies rather then the name of a uni.
