I was just wondering has anyone done a digital 3D animation? I know last year there were only like 15 3D animations. Just wonderin...

Wow fifteen? I only saw two I think in Art Express.
I was going to do a 3D/2D/Live action but I couldn't write a script I was happy with. And I wasted a lot of time on that script.
Anyway, how long did it take you guys? Did you feel pressured by the short time or did you manage your time well? What programs did you use?
Sorry about the Q&A! I'm just so curious about what I missed out. I wanted to carry out my original proposal so much but I knew I'd be damned if I did.

Hey ummmmm well to give you and idea it was 5minutes 55 seconds long and well i was up pretty much every single night this year till 3:30am working on it from 5pm each night. But i love 3D alot so i don't mind......of course that left no room for other subjects hehe...The showreel is entirly 3D with no actual film and it took me on average 4 minutes per frame to render. (For those oblivious, there are 24 frames of animation to be rendered for 1 second of film. So as you can imagine it took ALOT of rendering time!!)
I used 3D Studio Max R3..i have an old student version so its about 3 releases previous to anything that was used in even the art express animation of 2003. I am completly self taught in Max and its taken me about 4 years to get to what i can do today.
Its called 'Suburban Reality' and follows the chain of events that occurs in a small country town after a road worker arrives. Its been nominated for Art Express 2004 and also helped me to get a Full fee scholarship to KvB Institute of Technology.

Wow... hehe the work load/daily clock Tro described there sounds a lot like - what I was doing in the last two months. ^_^; Starting at 7am during holidays... finishing at 3-4am if I'm lucky...
(Equivallent to somewhat like doing a story board for a thirty minute animation I think!! Because I'm an ammeture, quite clumsy and like to make things perfect... I did a manga - 21 pages... Each page was done say 8 to 17 times. LoL... aih... had I started earlier at the rate I was going... with quite a few VAPDs maybe I could have done 2D animation... but stupid writers block...)
Only... I think sleep was occasional. As a result I am now officially nocturnal. High five Tro! Hahha... I failed my trials and put Art as a priority. What about you?
You're very lucky to have learned earlier (and smart! hahah). One of the reasons why i decided not to do 3D was because I knew I lacked skills and stuff and would have had to learn years and years of study within a few months which was impossible. Hence my original proposal of a mix of 2D/3D/Live Action. Oh.. It woulda been so good if I could have done it but ah well, I'm a human and a lazy one at that. ^_~

Interactive art - you know - I'm really interested in the theory behind interactive art. What case study artists did you do, Bezzer?

Yeah im nocturnal too....and yes i prioritiesed art over other subjects hehe
Im also a perfectionist which is why most of the time i would render 3 times a shot if something looked wrong (like particles and smoke) considering if i had rendered it all back to back it would have taken over 1500 hours...and usually rendered things about 3 times i wonder how i ever got this thing done on time hehe

I remember rendering ONE still shot of a stupid cup pouring wine out... Oh gosh... that took me a whole day and a half. (It was for experimentation in year 11.) - Oh but it included learning how to go about doing it...
How'd you learn? Through books, internet or just playing around with the software? <- the last option was how I learned Photoshop and Strata 3D... lol...
You must be into games and all that jazz. ^_^;
Are you working towards working at any big name companies? ooh... can I have the KvB website? Right now - I'm looking to go to Uni first and get some skills in other areas meanwhile building up a portfolio and teaching myself 3D (which you've managed to have done in the last four years of high school... waaa... so lucky...) then I'm going to try and get a scholarship from Atari to CGC. But hey - I'm open to any other possibilities. Where is KvB at anyway?

, lol...hehe no i started begginging of fouth term last 2002. i used 3D Studio Max and there was me and my music thats all hehehe. It was a total pain in the ass all the tim with damn errors and plug in propblems etc etc..
i used to do 3D characters for mods for Half Life then moved into doing my own animations and stuff
I taught myself Max and i have a few books and stuff. I hope to do some specialised Maya courses after i finish my generalised Visual Comms degree at KvB then try and get into some animation companies in North Sydney hopefully.

Well im also involved in writing and producing a new proper non-hollywood thriller film which will be shot over the next year. Hoping to get a few sponsors for that. I want to have my own production company for 3D an also film in general.
Of course before all of that happens i just wanna be involved some day in the 3D element of something like Lord of the Rings or the Matrix before i move along
I did free work for about 4 different games about 2 years ago though and thats just a bit boring for me now
i was character design and creation...and yes all three of the games bombed out however one of the dudes i worked for is now the head person for Half Life 2's new coding (after the re-coding cause of someone stealing it)
