Difficulty and scaling of advanced versus general maths (1 Viewer)

This is for a medical school application, where absolute ATAR is everything.

According to HSC Ninja, there seems to be very little difference in scaling between the two, so why would anyone choose advanced over general unless they were really good at maths?

We have been told by the school that advanced maths is a prerequisite for medicine, but that does not appear to be so in looking at the medical school websites, so there seems no point in doing it.

I know for a fact that the differences between adv maths and general maths is that adv maths is a calculus based course worth 2 units wheras general maths is a non calculus based course worth 2 units of the HSC. Apparently general maths is a repeat of junior maths, and remember that for the HSC general maths is split into general maths 1 and general maths 2 and one of them in a non ATAR course (can't remember which)

Advanced maths is much better to choose than general maths because it opens more doorways to uni degrees (well to be more exact, doing advanced maths means that you won't struggle as much as other students who don't do maths. Remember there is assumed/recommended knowledge, there are no prerequisites at the moment). If you plan to do a science degree of some sort (I can't remember what other degrees require maths) then you will be doing maths in that science course (I think)

As for maths being a prerequisite for medicine, I am not 100% sure about that, it's best to ask someone who studies medicine in uni

UNSW and USYD doesn't have prerequisites...yet.

If you do Med in another state, like VIC, there are prerequisites. Which could include Med. But generally, no, Med does not need maths.

General isn't good for ATAR I think (or for learning maths), especially compared to the other levels of HSC maths. You should do consider doing 4U.
