It's very rarely in the exams, but you should learn it as part of the geometric definition of the derivative...

is that where you use some sort of weird formula, something to do with a 'h'? My teacher said it could potentially be in there but its a low chance, I dont think its been in there for the last few years? So maybe this year is a chance.

yes, there is a chance that it will be tested. it's not hard to learn anway, just basic functions and limits.

They give you the formula. But you should know it anyway.

Differentiating from first principle: 3-4 steps

Differentiating from short method:1-2 steps.

i personally think the first principle is just time wasting.

There is an alogorithm to doing it (set of ~6 cases in which you do a particular action) which involve multiplying by the denominator/denominator etc but I can't recall them - try looking them up

there is almost a 2-3 mark question on it, spend the 10 minutes it takes to learn it, its worth it

It's best if you learn it. You may never use it, but it's good to know the basics from where you do all differentiating.
