How do you make diagrams such as those that appear in the HSC?

Do HSC papers use MathType or do they use Latex with a different font? Does this matter?
Which is easier to use and learn?

I do all my diagrams in Microsoft word. When you learn to use it properly, it can look exactly like HSC.

I am certain that HSC exams use TeX based on a Times New Roman font, which definitely matters.

Mathtype is easier to use in the short run, but TeX is definitely cleaner in the long run plus files are significantly smaller.

But images using TeX can be a bitch to make I hear (TikZ)

Diagrams are a bitch to hardcode in TeX because you need tons of inputs to specify for that diagram output. It's probably easier to just import an image instead.

I use programs like inkscape to create diagrams (or even better something like kig for geometric figures) and then import them into my tex files. Ends up looking pretty good.

There is a program called Asymptote that can make beautiful diagrams in TeX. Importing images may cause you to lose vector lines and cause blurring when zooming in. (unless that is what you want)

What are you making? Exam?

I think TikZ is used by many professional mathematicians but the necessity of it is questionable. Unless you are a lecturer that needs to create such images frequently, or writing notes, its probably not worth your time to learn TikZ.

With regard to HSC exams being written in TeX... have a look:

2013 MX2 HSC:

Mathtype:

LaTeX:

You can clearly see the large brackets on the second equation. The HSC paper has squarish brackets that finish curved. LaTeX has them fully curved off. Notice that the subscripts take up different amounts of space on LaTeX compared to the HSC paper, which is more similar to the Mathtype version.

TeX has different font packages based off it's own font.

You can TeX documents based on a Times New Roman font, which is the default Math Type one.

So it could be possible (very much so) that the HSC is TeX'ed from a TNR base.

That's true. I was going to DL tex in times but I couldn't be bothered.

Anyway its not paramount ... though I could go call some exam committee people during work and see what they use lol
