teaching yourself is always an option and if u try hard enough (and also happen to have a functioning brain :p) then all will be ok...its just a harder way but sometimes there is nothing else to do

well i cant really comment on you personally cause i dont know the subjects you do, but hsc phy / chem is basically rote learning that can be done out of a textbook..maybe ask the teacher on 1 or 2 dot pts now and again but generally you learn the stuff on ur own

The average UAI to enter was in the 40's and 50's many years ago...and many of the older teachers didnt do a 3 to 4 yr structured course where they had to learn everything about teaching techniques and the learning process (things like motivation) plus their specialisation. Then you have to take into account experience, support and whether or not the teacher actually likes their job.

In line with 'the times' the UAI mark is quite high now and most education courses at many uni's are pretty full on (believe me I, I'm doing one now).

For every 'bad' teacher there are plently of excellent ones.
Many years ago, there wasnt even a UAI (how cute-it was TER back then.... if a mark was required at all. You are talking back before HECS etc when entry was based upon "motivation').
Most were 2 (3 if you were lucky) year trained and you just applied to get into college (as uni's usually didnt offer education)

Meh, they are bad "everything". Why do the culturally popular thing and bag out education and teachers?
(yes, Im getting defensive about my chosen profession-sue me :) LOL)

Can understand the nature of thread I just dont see the "point" (+ I dont see that anyone has the right to criticise and generalise about another person)...... it has the potential to get very personal or general which (despite what you may think or say) is wrong (and not justified - look at some of the posts already here.... "there is no need for teachers" etc)

Besides, I found it amusing that the thread is about the worst teachers "ever" when the original poster can't even spell "worst". Maybe they should "blame" their English teacher for their "problems".....

('spose I'll cop it for "bagging" a student but then, isn't it justified?) ;)
LOL

yeah, some goods point u brought up, but they are concerning only the minority of ppl ignorant enough to believe that there is no need for teachers (the eng spelling mistake is a good one  )

but yeah, the majority of us respect our teachers (i hope so at least), we're simply telling anecdotes of the bad ones...there are particularly bad students just as there are particularly bad teachers and dont lie and say u dont gossip about (or at least talk about) nightmare students in those secret staffrooms of yours :p lol

To be honest, no I dont gossip about any of my students (unless I'm proud of what they have done and Im showing them off to others).
At the end of the day, its not worth bitching about bad/awful students as :
1) it brings me down to their level!! (the bad kids I mean- Im sure you know the type Im talking about)+ it really messes up your day if you discuss and dwell upon the PIA in your classes....
2) it makes me hate my job (which I really love) and to dwell on the dickheads makes it not worth caring about and busting my guts to try and make every single lesson interesting (this doesnt happen all the time but I challenge anyone here to try and even contemplate doing this!!)
If anything, I will discuss students with my peers in an attempt to see why a particular thing didnt work and how to make it work.....
:)

hahaha when my yr5/6 teacher got pissed at us, he'd say, "i can sit here and twiddle my thumbs all day, and still get paid while you learn nothing." (which was pretty much what happened most of the time anyway LOL... but he was nice. to me, anyway :p)

btw, i think it is essential that you have good teachers. well, for yr11 and 12, anyway. i had a CRAP teacher for 2u maths in yr11 and more than half the class dropped to general or dropped maths altogheter.

Nearly all the teachers (have full timed at 3 schools) I know cant be bothered to bitch constantly about their PIA's (unless its justified-I was once pinched on the bum by a student when walking through the hallway and I felt so 'volilated'-yes, I know. How dramatic but its true- that I had to talk about it). I mean, why complain about a 15 or 16 year old (yr 9/10). They are idiots- get on with it.
Usually only bring PIA's up when there is a parent interview or the equivalent happening and we have to talk about it- that or we have to fill in disciplinary forms and have describe in huge detail stuff.......
To be honest, I hardly hear staff complaining constantly about kids (unless they are really ticked off and need to talk about it and usually its quite subjective as they are preping for discipinary issues) as its considered unprofessional and could be subjective to litigation/disciplinary responses....... ie its not worth it!

:( I had some shit teachers and some great ones -------

I rekcon that all teachers have to do te HSC with the students and if they cant get a band 6 or high band 5 in the subjects that they teach, then they really shouldnt be teaching it!!
Your a teacher, do ya rekcon that this is fair----

I mean motavation is the key but a good teacher really really helps;) from my experience anyways, some teachers told just to summerise textbooks for the whole yr and just sat there reading newspapers for the whole boody yr  -------

Teachers get paid more if they have been working longer but I reckon they should be paid more for performance, if you can raise the average or just ranks for your students compaired to the rest of the school then you derserve more!!

   I get really mad when I hear teachers who havent done any teaching for the whole (just says copy overhead and summerise ---some just go get on with some work ,any work in the HSC!!) getting really pumped for strikes for more pay!! And I'm think TEACHER :chainsaw:

my ex chem teacher's idea of preparation for a class lesson was to stand in front of the book room and think which book he'll use for that period and what he should teach !
and whenever we would ask him a question hes replies "what do you think? figure it out for yourself and then tell me" ...... and then he would either ignore us or go off onto another topic which really does not answer the question

-- i dropped chem ! lol

I hope I am reading this wrong..I should be getting a band 4 and less to teach HSC by your reckoning??
LOL

This is the same in every field . Have to disagree with you here (though if I can big note myself, I fit into your description of raisng both ranks and marks-Yes, i am that good..). Experience and more importantly, loyalty (especially in education where the pay and more to the point, the working conditions are crap in comparison to other white collar jobs) should be rewarded.
