Anyone know about this Dell Battery recall thing in the news today?

I did a search and it appears there was a recall last year. Not sure why the news mentioned it today.

Anyway, I have no idea who the hell to contact. I'm affected cause I have a Inspiron 510m

OH LORD WHY DID I BUY DELL?????????????????????????????????????????
nah just kidding...they were generally good

I leave my laptop on all the time.

It's been running constantly for the past .... i dunno how many months.
I give it the occassional restart, but other than that, it runs 24/7.

It sometimes ticks, and sometimes makes whirring noises, but it's running fine and hasn't exploded.

Hope that gives other Dell laptop owners a brighter look on their machines :)

It's only the batteries. If you have it plugged in the battery isn't being used so there is no reason for it to burst into flames.

it's plugged in most of the time - not all.

but you bring up another point.
when my laptop has been plugged in for a long time, the battery will drop down to about 80% and start charging back to 100%
The power cord hasn't come out, and I haven't had a surge or power failure to make the laptop switch to battery.

so you can send your battery back if the MODEL of the laptop is listed?

I only thought you could send it back if the battery serial was part of the group

haha, thats what you get for buying dell.

they dont give a shit about quality, just care about piecing together some fugly brickish laptop with good specs so they look decent on ads

but if you compared them side by side with the toshibas and asus and compaqs in a store they are all shite

The batteries were made by Sony if you did any reading...

if you did any substantitive reading, those batteries are also used in hp and other computers, yet they are fine.

The recharging pack made by dell is therefore the problem

I wouldn't draw that conclusion so quickly. Companies like HP have also faced similar issues (from memory, two large recalls from HP were announced in Nov 05; and again in Apr 06'), but since Dell's customer service is apparently so shit (lucky I haven't had to ring Dell Customer Support yet for anything), I ain't surprised the spotlight has focused on them. When the exploding Dell fiasco started on theinquirer, the photo involved was arguably the first which actually captured the notebook burning, which should of definitely driven intense interest. Note theinquirer also posted another similar article on an Apple exploding due to a lithium-ion battery malfunction a little while later, but no one gave a crap about that. All in all, I'd say it's a mixture of bad luck aswell as Dell's track record of shit service which drove them into this shit.
