time magazine is very biased when they mentioned the technologies in the warzone all the nano weapons and the fears of losing a number of americans and they mentioned the katrina vitcims suffering it fills up the whole mag but when they mention the victims of the iraq war there like one passage no matter how many died!

also i just laughed my ass of and enjoyed this uncut documentary where the reporters when too far and recorded the soliders point of view (they werent allowed without permission and guidance by the superior officers) in the falalah i watched an interview about this distressed solider shaking covered in blood complaining that all his friends died and he shouldnt have joined the army it wasnt humane and he burst into tears it put a smile to my face to see that finally someone there realises what was goin on in reality!

I applied for the Army last year through ADFA. Went through the processes and stuff and even got a free laptop (ie. ADFA Education Award).

Did you have to go through a psychological examination? If so what did they do/ask and how did you respond?

Ah yep, there is two psyc thingys involved. The first ones during an inital assessment where you fill in a form that basically gives them an inital impression of your state of mind ie. "Do you stand on high places and want to jump off". Pretty stock standard but some questions make you think esp. the questions regarding drinking habits. Best advice = be honest.

The second is during the OSB (Officer Selection Board). They can be quites stressfull and the questions can put you on the spot. They are designed to expose your character based on your responses. There is no real right or wrong answer ( unless you say something waaaay out there). I can only remember one question " Are you aware that during your service you may be put in a postion in which deadly force may need to be used? Do you think you are capable?"
Again you have to give YOUR opinion and YOUR thoughts because there is no standard answer. Honesty is the best policy, I guess.

As a word of warning to school age ADFA applicants, they may knock you back on a lack of involvement in 'leadership' activities eg SRC and/or a lack of team sport involvement. A friend of mine was knocked back on that, the upside is he got a fully paid up cadetship with Bluescope.

The majority of first years are straight out of school. There are some ex-servies and a few who have been to uni. So there are a lot of teenagers.
On the military side, i've done plenty of weapons shoots, with both the F88 and F89 ( Steyr and Minimi- Light Machine Gun). On Single Service Training, we were taught basic patrolling, Fire Orders and navigation, lots and lots of navigation, plus other assorted field military things.
Also we do military law, mil history, mil communications and leadership theory and pracs.
Throw in there some PT and thats my mil year in a nutshell.

Yep theres a medical phyiscal, basically involves and eye, hearing and body medical physical.

Then theres the Inital Fitness Assesment
Now for Army its
15 Pushups
45 Situps
Beep Test to 7.5

So basically its the easiest physical fitness test you will ever do in your life.

What's the political climate at ADFA like? Are you encouraged not to express too openly political alleigience, and are there repercussions for those who do? What if you suck at maths?

On skinny Asians, I was surprised one night watching the news to see an Australian soldier in Iraq with a beaming Asian face smiling back at me.

Medics in the Armed Forces

Does anyone know anything about the recruitment process to become a nursing officer in the navy? i'm pretty sure you have to start uni first then apply? do they just do basic military training, not all the ADFA stuff?

Allrighty, in all honesty there are no skinny asians, but plenty of the people here are not solidly built.

Fire Orders are basically how you locate and target the enemy once in a contact. You yell out the range of target and in refrence to something else

eg.
RANGE 200
REFRENCE DAM 2'O'CLOCK
TARGET BASE OF TREE
20 ROUNDS, FIRE!!!!!!!!!

So you yell that out so people in your section know whats going on and where the targets are.

2) ADFA Army Cadets spend 12 months at RMC-D after completing 3-years of their degree, meaning Arts and Science Students have already graduated and Engies have to do their RMC time then go back to ADFA for their fourth year.

3) Political Climate........ you can say whatever you want to your mates but thats where it stays. If you suck at maths then dont do maths, doesnt really mean anything.

4) We hardly ever have anything of weekends but when we do it might be sport, or a SQN Activity. My SQN went to Sydney for the weekend and had to undertake a Amazing Race style activty where we ran around the city trying to find answers to problems presneted to us. But your weekends are usually free.

5) RMC entry means that they will have a higher expectation of your maturity and life experiences. The means they will look at what you have been doing with your life, including employment.

The recruiting process includes a meeting with a selection board, a psyc test, a medical, fitness test and an aptitute test like all other defence force applicants.
ADFA is a specialist university for those who are becoming officers. To be a nurse in the navy or adf you must also be currently qualified as a registered nurse and show proof of registration to practice in Australia, and demonstrate currency of practice by having completed a minimum of 2 years post registration in general nursing duties within the last 3 years. This can be made up of either 12 months hospital based training and 12 months full time employment or 2 years full-time employment. But if u want the defence force to sponser you and to pay a salary while you are at university you must of done at least one year of the course at uni. But it requires a return of service for the number of sponsered years plus 1 year.

Questions

At the ADFA, what kind of courses are offered?
I checked out that booklet that my careers adviser gave me and it said stuff about IT, science, maths etc. So does that mean ADFA applicants have the same courses available to them as say, a UNSW applicant?

When you're in the ADFA, where do you actually study? Like where IS the ADFA? Is it on the UNSW campus (Saw a building there with the RAAF sign)?

Is it Physically demanding? Do i have to do more work than i do at a training session for football?

And lastely, are there any arabs/lebanese/asians/indians or is the majority Australian?

ADFA is in Canberra. You are required to live on-campus during semester.

Really? It is? But i live in Sydney, so how do i stay on campus?
Do they provide me with a accommodation that i pay for etc?

ADFA is more demanding than training for footy? Have a guess.

Lol, maybe a better question would have been, compared to footy training, how much harder is it? I know its gonna be hard, but like, do i ALWAYS have to be able to run 3km EVERYDAY!!?!?!

When you arrive at ADFA, you are allocated to a Division. The Div will have its own accomadation building. Theoretically it isnt free accomadation, but the amount is automatically deducted from your pay

Physically, hard to say.
We usually do 3 PT sessions a week, and they can be fairly easy or hard to the point where you think you will die. It all varies from cardio, strenght, battle, aqua and team training forms of PT. However the expecation is that you take your physical fitness into your own hand. You are expected to pass the Basic Fitness Assesment each year.

ARMY : 50 Push-ups
75 Sit-ups
2.4km run in under 10mins 40secs

Physical fitness is important in our careers and so a big emphisses is placed on it

Nah, the BFA stays the same, but that is only the Basic Fitness Assesment. There is still others such as Combat Fitness Test, SF Barrier and any Corp specific fitness assesment.
The 50 push-ups need to be done in 2mins, you cannot adrop during the test but you may stop for a rest if you are still in the push-up position. 75 sit-ups is piss easy, and your feet are supported. They are to cadence however, and the PTIs dont stop the tape till it gets to 100
