So my half-yearlies are approaching very fast, and my RSI in my right wrist is becoming a serious problem.

As I write notes, I get an annoying pain in the back of my wrist when I bend my it forward enough. I also have a generally weak right hand-wrist at the moment. How would I be able to deal with it come exam time? Fortunately, my subjects don't require tons of essay-writing. I'm already planning to use body tape as a brace (works well), fit all my pens with grips and only use a computer mouse with my left hand.

I had the exact same problem two years ago.

Except my RSI was caused by solving too many Rubik's cubes (no joke, I would solve them and time myself for hours on end).

I also had (and still have) a ganglion cyst in my right wrist.

Don't let it hit you during your exam. See a doctor first so he can refer you to get it checked out properly via X-ray (if it's that serious) and/or see a Physiotherapist about it.

If it is that bad, discuss it with your school teachers to see if anything can be done (extra time for exams if the pain makes you write slower) etc. Make sure you give them plenty of notice.

And of course have some sort of certification to justify your claims (so they don't think you're just another bludger).

Thanks for the quick response :)

I saw the doctor a while ago about RSI actually, and I mentioned the fact I had some weird cyst in my right hand (which I've since accidentally popped... twice) near the base of my wrist. He said it was normal, so I ignored it.

At the moment, with the help of a brace and grips, it's not bad enough to severely affect me, but could get worse.

The cyst you speak of is called a Ganglion Cyst.

I remember popping mine by accident once, it was a very strange sensation feeling the fluid seep out of the cyst and into tissue...

Try your luck anyway and see if your school can do anything. It's your HSC, you don't want to have the regret of not doing everything you could have (even if it means asking for special consideration) for it.

Just wondering, what was the treatment for your RSI? I think I might have RSI since I do have some of the symptoms. My hands and wrists certainly feel a bit weaker than they normally do and there is pain in my right arm.

Treatment: Stop solving cubes.

Nothing else apart from that and the pain went away after a month or so.

So obviously the treatment is to stop whatever caused the RSI. However if someone had to do something as part of their job but it was causing the RSI, what would that person do?

Yep, but of course you would see a Physiotherapist about it first, or a doctor. But most likely they will just direct you to a Physio anyway.

I plan to go to the doctor about this since my wrist has been in pain all day! If I am 16 years of age, as long as I have a medicare card from one of my parents, would I allowed to go there by myself?

Oh also good news, the cyst seems to have disappeared from my hand so it's only mildly weak now. I got a sore hand from a 50min English assessment but I'm assuming that's pretty normal unless I train it. I guess the stuff written in my first post became helpful eventually.

Those giant squishy grips I picked up from Kmart for $2 were actually pretty helpful. So much more comfortable than holding a tiny thin pen barrel.

Something else I'd suggest is changing pens to one that works well without having to press hard on the paper. Eg biros are bad, felt tips or gel pens are great

My hands, wrists and arms got better a few days after I went to the doctor. All it required was rest, medication that the doctor gave me and massaging this menthol thing on my wrists and arms twice a day :)
