With a reputation as innovators, Daft Punk have never really played by the rules. Even still, reports that the French duo are set to unveil their much-hyped forthcoming album Random Access Memories in a town with a population of 2,000 has come as a particular shock. According to the Herald Sun and triple j, Daft Punk are set to host their “global album launch party” in the Australian town of Wee Waa, situated in the North West of regional New South Wales.
Sound like a joke? The Wee Waa council thought so, too. Speaking to the Narrabri Courier (the original source of the story), Shire Mayor Conrad Bolton told that he though a “mate was pulling my leg” when he got the call that Sony wanted to bring arguably the most famous dance act in the world to the small town. “We think Wee Waa is so uniquely Australian, so the folks at Sony Music along with Daft Punk thought it fitted the bill perfectly,” Bolton explained. “Daft Punk is known for breaking down barriers and coming up with new creative, innovative ideas to launch their albums.” Seeking clarification, inthemix spoke to a representative from Sony who remained predictably coy on the subject, neither confirming nor denying the Wee Waa event.
The event, if it’s to be believed, is set for the night of May 17 – the same day Random Access Memories officially drops. Tickets are limited to 4000, but that’s not the only hurdle you’ll have to cross to get to the show: Wee Waa is about eight hours drive from Sydney and doesn’t have a commercial airport.
