Let's say hypothetically you go to a pathetic regional backwater selective school, let's call it Giraween, for example. :p

What kind of school rankings across the board would give you a serious chance at say... 99.5 or 100?
Would you need to top all your subjects and then some?

Thankyou. :)

You would need to be very close to the top of your subjects, or placed closely behind the other students who are brillant in the subject and will perform well in the HSC exam.

I'll put it this way - the closer to being ranked first in all subjects, the greater the chances of a higher UAI

Suppose you were ranked either first, second or third for all your subjects, and the only knowledge you have of your fellow candidates is the fact that they failed as miserably as yourself in the selective school entrance exam...

Is there any place to find out the top mark obtained by a school in each subject?

(I'm in Yr 11 so it's purely out of curiosity)

Failed as miserably as yourself in the selective entrance exam?

The exam is no certain indication of HSC performance (perhaps a rough guide), particularly if a student's confidence develops over the years since they sat the exam. Dedication and committment is the key to the HSC, as with most things in life. :)

I'm assuming there's a lot more people than 3 doing the subject, so top 3 rankings should be fine.

Using SAM, for 2003, one would basically need to get top3% across the board... is it reasonable to assume 3 people would get that in a given school?

Hmm, depends on the school.

I'd say it's reasonable to assume they have a chance. :)

In my humble opinion, it will be neccessary to top the subjects to get 100.. and to get 99.5+ you need to come top 2 in subjects with decent marks.

Yeh, but the quality of the students will be dependent on the school.

Affinity and Cyph, thankyou. Quite some work ahead of me...

no it doesnt. the fact that we go to girra means that we as a group will do generally better than a normal public state school. The good marks from a group give an indication that they are from a selective school and because the group has done well, the marks get boosted alittle..

The school doesn't affect your mark, but it will affect the significance of coming 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the form for a course... and since Giraween is almost as retarded as my own school, I chose it for these purposes... (yes Kimmeh I do want to get hit :p)
