Has anyone done this? i.e studied somewhere else in Australia other than their home university.

I'm considering moving to Melbourne for a semester, while gaining credits from my home university.

Does your home uni have any relevant subjects that can be done by distance instead of finding a different institution?

When asking permission to do a cross-institutional enrolment (have to ask both uni's) don't forget to ask what it will look like when it shows up on your transcript. If it will just say "6cp Unspecified Credit", then you may as well be doing TAFE which will give you the same result (if it is accepted as credit).
