For Extension 1, is it frowned upon if your related texts aren't 'highbrow' or 'literary' works but they still explore crime fiction/ genre in interesting ways? Because for an assessment due next term most people in my class seem to be doing novels from writers that are seen as 'sophisticated' (Pynchon, Sylvia Plath, Dostoyevsky) but mine are from less acclaimed writers. Also, I'm supposed to have at least two relateds, so if I have a novel and a short story is this o.k? (finding it much harder to find interesting films than written texts)

Thanks in advance

My teacher said that it's best to avoid texts that are from the canon, simply because they limit your discussion about the subversion of conventions and representations of different values, so in my eyes, lesser-known texts are fine. I've chosen one myself! So long as you have chosen texts that are unique and explore crime fiction conventions in interesting ways that you can discuss with the prescribed texts, you should be sweet!
