Suppose you have ethanol, which can be written in two forms: C2H5OH and CH3CH2OH.
Firstly, what is the correct name for each of these...are they both considered to be condensed structural formulae? Secondly, which is the more correct form when writing an equation for the HSC?

If you were asked to write an equation in which an isomer of a particular substance was formed, would it be best to write it in the second form so as to demonstrate where each of the atoms is located on the chain?

1. CH3-CH2-OH is the condensed strucutral form, and i would include the bonds too.
2. Well, HSC markers arent really that fussed about such a little thing, so both would be acceptable
3. Yes use the second one as i said in 1, i wud recommend u drawing in the bonds too

Both are ethanol. The second formula just shows the structual formula which would save you having to draw the whole molecule, but it depends on which one u seem to feel is easier. As they are the same molecule just seperated more in the second one they would both be condensation ploymers in which the hydroxyl will seperate as will the H on the opposite side condensing to form water and the polymer formed (cant actually remember the name lol)

Hmm...esterification? (although it doesn't form a polymer)

Seeing as the second one is a condensed structural formula, does the first one have a specific name at all?
