Hi,

I'm currently undertaking a combined degree in computer science and maths. I was wondering if the ADF has need for such graduates and what areas of the ADF (if any) would graduates of computer science and maths be hired for?

Computer Science Careers and Maths

Hi there

The ADF has extensive computer and communication networks that require maintenance and management. ADF careers enjoy a lot of variety, an officer in charge of a LAN for an entire military base may only do that for a few years and then get the opportunity to work in an area completely removed from their core specialisation, for example, aircraft maintenance.

However, we have people in the defence force who are pilots, air defence officers and general service officers in the army (there are others as well) who hold computer science degrees. So you have plenty of options if you do not necessarily wish to have a career where you directly apply your degree.

As an Officer in the ADF, the opportunity to work in the IT department will usually be a job that you will do for only a few years. In the Army you can belong to "Signals Corps" which means communication is your main role, however, officers do not make careers out of working with or in the IT area.

The people in the ADF that are most likely able to work most of their career, if not all of it, in the IT area will be those who enter as general entry. For example, CISCON in the RAAF, CIS in the Navy and a few more in the Army.

The reason why is because Officers are employed as leaders and managers and they are expected to work in different environments to give themselves a lot of experience for professional development for eventual promotion up the ranks .

Everyone needs to understand that although location and job preferences do get taken into account, being in the ADF means that sometimes you can be posted somewhere because the ADF needs you in a position due to your skill set.

Imagine if the ADF was full of people that were not prepared to go where their country needed them to go...you see at the end of the day, no matter what the job, we all play a part in the defence of our nation and that is why we are called servicemen and servicewomen.

After training, all full-time ADF personnel get almost $10,000 on top of their wage simply because of this type of reason. Its called "service allowance" and we get it becuase we MAY get posted somewhere we didn't ask for....but if we get posted exactly where we want we still get it too.
