I'm sincerely interested in a composing music for media as a career, but have little idea as to how to approach university degrees for this purpose. Are there any credible institutions or universities that provide worthwhile composition courses? In America, for example, some colleges actually cater for music in video games and film, with specialised courses in these areas. I'm having trouble finding similar opportunities in Australia, however.

If, as I sadly suspect, such courses do not in fact exist here, what's the next best thing? Would a course at SAE or AIM help? Is it worth applying to the Sydney Conservatorium Of Music, or is that directed towards experimental, avant-garde music? Is the Contemporary Music course at Southern Cross University of any merit?

Thanks in advance!

To compose for film and such, a composer should be familiar with the basics of composition - and that's what the best composition courses equip you with. It's only after that point that you can start looking for the sorts of media jobs that pay well and bring fame.

To push the Con's course a bit more: Among the Con's current cohort is the guy that wrote the LJ Hooker jingle and the guy that created the annoying Network Ten "seriously" thingy-that's-too-annoying-to-even-be-a-jingle. Perhaps more relevant, guest lecturers have included composers like Nigel Westlake (Babe, Antarctica, The Nugget etc.) and Carl Vine (The Battlers, The Potato Factory).

The Con has really good connections to the Sydney Film School, which is always a bonus for writing film music, and i think you can specialise in film music for a semester or something

More like, my friend david at the Con has really good connections to Sydney Film School. The Con doesn't care about Sydney Film School.

But yeah. There are a few subjects that deal with that stuff at the Con. I'm not sure if you can do it though. Electronic Music 5 is Film and Music, which is a composition unit.
