Commerce: Monash or Melbourne (1 Viewer)

Planning to do commerce at monash or melbourne next year which one do you guys see as being better?In terms of higher ranked by potential employers/generally better place to study at. Also is it worth doing the commerce/economics double degree or is the extra year a waste of time? thanks in advance

I don't really have much of an idea.. and I would not make a decision purely based on what I say..

but I have a lot of friends that go to Monash and they really love it.. apparently monash is better for law (all my mates say so) so i dunno maybe it would fit into that category for commercy stuff..

melbourne uni could possibly be just a name.

also, dont forget to take into account things such as travel and study enviornment.. because these things will effect your study.. which one do you think you will be most happy at?

If I were you.. I'd go to the open days and speak to the current students that study there..
that can give you the best indication..
also because for the most part, i think students will give you an honest answer..
i remember when i was trying to find out about what uni was better for studying computer science and i asked how does xxx compare to zzzz uni i got so much out of it!

Higher enter doesn't mean it's a better course. Just means more people apply for it.

Attend each uni's respective open days and see what they have to offer.

and also you won't find people who can tell you which course is better cos none of them would have studied at both, unless they transferred from one uni to the other.

no. getting good grades, having work experience and having an attractive personality shits all over the ENTER requirement for a course you applied for 5 years ago.

many things effect the ENTER of a course.

For instance:
*the name of the university.. I know a lot of people that have gone to Melbourne University because it has become well known and is rather prestigious.. for instance the enter for an arts degree might be higher then umm.. swinburne.. but that does not necessarily mean that it is better.. it is label.. it is like RipCurl ya know.. they charge $90 just for a t-shirt because it says RipCurl.
*the popularity - people tend to choose to do degrees at particular universities for their location. Eg. compare the enter for a course at a campus in Gippsland to one in Melbourne. The Melbourne ENTER will be higher not because it is necessarily better but because it is more popular because more people live there.. eg. more competition.
*the Government - I used to think that because the ENTER was really low (around 50) to study a degree in Mathematics at RMIT University that the course was in fact really crap. After some research I came to the conclusion that I was in fact wrong. RMIT is a pretty good uni btw. For one not many people are interesteded in mathematics and also the Government pressed that we need more mathematians so the score got lowered.

Choosing the right university takes some research and thought. I think some year 12 students are not aware of this... usually being stressed and pressed to just put any thing down.. so they just go by the ENTER... which is not the way to go. You need to go to open days, talk to previous students, compare the rate of employment, where they are being employed (they could fool you by saying people are getting employed after the degree but didn't care to mention they are working at Chop Soy factory that looks like a Prison), location, majors/minors, specialisation (RMIT is welll known being good in computers/engineering wheras Monash is for law), etc. The ENTER can give you an indication but by no means is it the decider.

Monash is a lot better for business areas like law, commerce etc. Melbourne is more for languages, arts, sciences (stuff that don't make money). But it's got prestige (noble prizes etc).

So depends if you're to become a scientist or osmething. If not, Monash hands down. Melb commerce grads are virtually unemployable outside of Australia. the university has no exposure at all whereas Monash has done some serious promoting in the last decade in some of the largest economies in this world after Tokyo/New York, i.e. Hong Kong and Singapore.

look its all about being a rounded prson - you need like community involvement and involvement in clubs etc to get good jobs. i know heaps of people who get 99s but are nerds and they will never be employed

seriosuly my mate got like 70 went to swinburne and got a job at the largest accounting firm in the world. i think it was called price water deloitte or someting like that.
