hey guys
just wondering if anyone has any idea if the commerce courses in UNSW, UTS and Macquarie universities will go up?

because i've heard my mum say that commerce is on the downhill, and that it is likely to go down because of supply and demand, is this true for this year?

thanks

edit: oh yeah just another thing, how many people are there in one course on average?

not too sure, its rumoured to go up for UNSW anyway prob because of the new courses. I dont think the supply side would change that much but the demand will prob go up a bit

If you want to figure out whats going to happen to the UAI for a course do the following as a good guesstimate

find out how many places the course offered last year, how many they intend to offer this year

find out if they are increasing the size of the course (e.g. unsw was above usyd but they had more places last year because they expanded the facualty so the uai fell)

find out the size of the hsc canditature and the size of people from that who are actually applying through uac (e.g. in 2004 at first look people would say uai's were going to rise because it was the largest group of hsc students at the time, but the number of people applying through uac fell that year)

factor in the popularity of the course/institution

that should give u a rough estimate of the trend of where the uai is going

USYD too high for you, kid?

Your mum knows jack, no offence...like what evidence does she have that supply will increase and/or demand will decrease? What is she basing her opinon on?
nah i didn't choose USYD because it doesn't offer any commerce courses part time and i need part time courses for my cadetship.

my mum based her opinion on another friend, who is a professor of commerce in UNSW, she said that since the govt is increasing the amount of part time in UNSW, then it is likely that the uai would go down.

also the UNSW co-op scholarship had a lower than usual amount of people applying for commerce courses this year.

so no offence, i'm writing on these predictions hoping to find out whether if its true or not, i'm not here to tell the world that my mum knows jack u idiot

Doesn't it depend on whether the new courses are desired by HSC students?

Anyway, I know that in my case, I'm pretty lucky to have made it into Commerce because the cutoff dropped 2 whole points from the year before. (95 down to 93)

professors don't know jackshit about what's going to happen to UAI cut-offs, either.

And how would anyone here know anymore than anyone else.

You can't predict it.

UTS doesn't offer a B. Commerce, so I guess you must mean B. Business.

UAI cutoffs don't fluctuate severely for these courses. They normally change between 1-3 points each year. I highly doubt that demand for economics/business/commerce degress will decrease enough to lower the cut offs by more than 5 points at the major unis, over one year.

The Economics degree at UNSW did drop by 5 points last year. (90 before, 85 this year) So that's a pretty big change, but I think that's because they made a lot more spaces this year.

I think as someone else mentioned, just do your best and see how it goes.

I heard rumours that it'll rise this year for UNSW as well with the new courses and improved faculty but really, these things can't be predicted and anything anyone tells you is either going to give you a false sense of security or make you more anxious than you need be.

It depends on how many extra spots are given or not given.
