I do CompSci Co-Op. 2nd year. I guess it depends how much detail you want..
Currently we get $12.5k a year.. next year it goes up to $13.4k. You get almost $500 a fortnight, which is a lot while you're at uni and not enough when you're working full time.
Compsci is not like BIT - BIT focuses a lot on the commerce side of things. There are MORE BITs than there are CompScis which may make a difference to you. We get the same amount of money, but have different sponsor companies and different schedules.
The schedule of Compsci, by the way:
1st year - full time uni
2nd year sem 1 - full time uni
2nd year sem 2 - full time work and if you like a few subjects at uni (I do one this sem)
3rd year sem 1 - full time uni
3rd year sem 2 - full time work
4th year sem 1 - full time work
4th year sem 2 - full time uni, no scholarship.
I haven't gone to a single co-op meeting in a suit, underthesun.
There are a few black-tie type events which aren't compulsory (graduations, awards etc etc).
First year involves a lot of maths (most of semester 1 is maths, if you hate it persevere since it subsides later on) and you need to think pretty logically for the programming side of things. You do a LOT of low-level programming at unsw no matter what course you do; if you really want to do graphic design and program as well that go to UTS. That uni is MUCH better for that sort of thing.
We tend not to be super-competitive in compsci but everybody else is very smart
(we got the 100 uai girl from 2002). I'm just hanging around
You do work fulltime (that's what I'm doing now .. er.. eating lunch.. yes.) which is good for some people (like me!) and crap for others. In a way it depends whether you go to a big company (I'm at Westpac) or a small one (Telstra ebusiness services or Whitesmiths, both of which verge on 'medium'). First time it's 6mths, second time (at a different company) is 12mths. You're not guaranteed a job afterwards but gz if you get one
I haven't done a single SENG corse, nor have I done a single INFS (infosys) course. I've done a database course which taught me SQL, I had two electives (Linguistics and Marketing) and I've done two gen eds (one on murderers, and astronomy). It is actually a scholarship as the sponsor company doesn't pay us directly; it always comes from the uni.
If you get less than a CR average you may be required to explain why you should keep the scholarship. I know of a person who left co-op and rejoined.
I don't know where sunny's coming from (yes I do but shh) but I hated DSS and I refuse to do Comp Arch.. I may do a hardcore programming subject next session if I have the motivation (OS) but I'll probably wuss out
By the way, I'm not very strong at maths and it's not very hard to pick it up if you bother studying.
And at the interview there will be the course coordinator and at least one business rep. You might get a lecturer too.
