There is a resources boom in oz. I know they are desperately short of skilled trademen & technicians: welders etc etc. Check the Jobs page (I vaguely remember once a week they have special section on the mining/resources industry). I suspect most in demand would be civil, mechanical & chemical engineering.

Ask on Whirlpool Australia's forums, they have a lot of engineers there. Only a tiny amount of users here actually know how to answer your question.

I do a different type of engineering, but here is my perspective:

In terms of course difficulty/content, if you do Chemistry and 3 unit Maths in the HSC and enjoyed them, you'll enjoy Chemical engineering.

Careers are pretty good. Plenty of places want Chem. engineers.

off topic
But which branch of engineering are in demand and will be more demanding in the future?
I think mining, civil and electrical will be because of the oil, living space and energy stuff won't look so good in the future
what do you reckon?

yes

also i wouldnt count on mining being in demand forever, it only is at the moment because of the current mining boom. which might last pretty long. but i wouldnt count on it.

Petroleum and Surveying is also highly in demand.

tbh Aeronautical and Biomedical have the shittest job prospects in engineering.

Pretty much anything to do with Mining. Basically, the more specific eng's (Civil, Elec, Chem & Mech) are in my opinion, the best to do if you want something purely vocational.
