My girlfriend and I are looking to move out on our own, as she is pregnant and I want to have an active role in our child's life :)

I am 17 (but 18 August 21st), and she is 17, 18 next year.

The questions I have are:

1/ Will we each get separate Youth Allowance & Rent Assistance payments? (I'm still finishing Year 12)

2/ Will we be considered independent because she is pregnant, or will she need to have the child first?

3/ Does it matter that the child is not mine as far as the payments go? (Long story)

Thanks alot for your help everyone :)

Dude, I feel so sorry for you.

EDIT: But I have to say that I admire you for looking out for her even though it isn't yours.
You're either a really, really nice guy... or you're stupid and she has you wrapped around her finger.

LMAO You got me there XD

I changed it, I meant in reference to the centrelink payments. I know you get extra for having a dependent child, and I was wondering if the fact that the child isn't actually mine matters.

ok mate

lets just think about this

you're both 17
you're both still at school
the baby isnt even yours

dont wreck your life m8 lol

your options imo:

1) stay with the girl who unless she is a 150iq genius or super super hot isnt worth it. wreck your life for some kid who isnt yours
2) get an abortion
3) move on, get another girl.

Centrelink will most likely declare you as being in a de-facto relationship, where all income is shared.

Thanks for actually considering the questions lol!!!

So we'll only get one combined payment? Does the payment increase as we're a couple?

Well, sorry but I'm gonna have to jump on the ""why............?!!!!" bandwagon. The kid isn't even yours. Is she even worth staying with (I'm assuming she cheated on you and hence got pregnant). And if she became pregnant before she met you, why doesn't the real father be involved?

And lastly, make sure you don't do something you regret like claiming to be the father on the birth cert, because if you break up and cannot pay child support...you're screwed.

No she didn't cheat on me, there's no way in hell I'd stay if she had.

She had the kid before we met, and when the "dad" found out he ran a mile. She couldn't bring herself to have an abortion, and decided to keep the child.

To me, that's an honorable thing to do, and she's a great girl :)

Thanks for being so judgmental, really appreciate it :(

I've known her for a little over 2 years, but we didn't start dating until a couple months after she got pregnant.

Last time I checked, I didn't come here for relationship advice, I came here for advice on centrelink payments.

Most people on here are selfish prats, I think what you are doing is a great thing.

Your best bet would be to go speak with Centrelink directly, or maybe a Family/Relationships Centre, they'd be able to give you more practical advice.

Good luck :)

well mayb u should have come here for relationship advice then you wouldnt find yourself in this predicament m8

are you sure you wont feel resentful towards this kid for being someone elses?

Edit: do not listen to BKM she purposely destroys relationships with people close to her for the fun of it and enjoys conflict

Wat? I could easily be wrong but i really dont think this is right...

My advice is to actually go to centrelink and ask yourself, thats the only way you will get proper, solid answers about your situation.

EDIT: btw, you dont intend to support yourselves entirely off centrelink payments do you? You do have another source of income...?

I don't see the issue. He's moving out with a girl he likes. It's not like they're getting married. And even if they were, it's not like marriage means anything.

This girl happens to be pregnant, but so what?

Why do you think moving out is such a big deal?

Sounds like great fun tbh, a real experience.

Use protection.
