Hello!
For the second line of defence there is a syllabus dot point on "Cell death to seal off the pathogen"
- I have the formation of granulomas
However, i've seen some people do apoptosis as well
It seems to me that apoptosis is only a normal cell death and doesn't particularly occur when cells are infected. Does anyone know if apoptosis is part of the immune response? Please help a rural student whose teacher has no clue...

Apoptosis does occur with an immune response (to remove infected cells), but it can also occur when there are unwanted cells that need be replaced by newer and more developed cells.

e.g. virally infected cells can be stimulated to undergo apoptosis by our immune system

also, as an (interesting) example normal (physiological) apoptosis occurs during fetal formation when limbs are forming. without proper apoptosis, our hands would still webbed like and we wont have proper distinct digits
