The arguments for protectionist policies are flimsy at best.

If a country specialises its production in what it can produce the most efficiently, ultimately there are more goods to be shared between everyone.

Tariffs, quotas etc. just protect innefficient industries making everyone (in material terms) worse off.

Granted when they are removed structual unemployment exists, but capitalism isn't gentle to quote Ross Gittins.

Frankly the only people who benefit are innefficient industries and govts who collect taxes.

One of the great shames of this century is the collapse of the Doha round, over 100 million people could have been brought out of poverty but the EU and US thought it better to protect their innefficient farmers. To be fair though, the French know how to riot.

Anyways on to the whole capitalism communism stuff. Economically speaking communism has no leg to stand on, chiefly because there is no incentive for innovation or to work hard, frankly.

Churchill said it best "The great vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessing. The great virtue of communism is the equal sharing of misery."

The way I see it is:

Capitalism - Fucks over people who can't work, eg. my little brother with Autism

Communism - Fucks me over

I would most defentially prefer a capitialist orientated society, with a good Government ofcourse which will allow for those who need the care to recieve it, you could say "only the strongest should survive" though I wouldn't want to fall ill after that rule is imposed.

Capitalism allow for supply and demand, If everyone aspires to be doctors we will have too many, so they get paid less and less people want to become doctors.

I don't like the term Capitalism because it has negative connotations. I prefer the term free market.

It is through the process of trading and free market that wealth is created, Socialism drains wealth because it involves taking other peoples earnings for the common good, While this sounds good at first what people don't realise is how wasteful and unsustainable such policy's are.

So in order to sustain these policies the government has to tax people even higher and wealth is not created through taxing people to death, Only productivity creates wealth.

Ultimately Socialist/Marxist policies fail because they create conditions that are inhumane and destroys human liberty.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donated 1.4 billion dollars towards AIDS, malaria and other preventable disease treatment, which happens to be over a quarter of what the World Health Organisation (that's money from taxpayers around the world) puts towards the same cause.

With more capitalism, over enough time, comes more wealth. More wealth means more time and money for people to become philanthropists. People are free to spend money without the political considerations that slows everything down.
