I can tell between 128 and anything >224 in MP3 format through headphones. It doesn't really bother me though, although the onyl time I will upgrade the quality is from 128-320. All I really want to hear is the music..

However, as Asylum said, going from crappy headphones to better headphones (or in my case, earphones) has a HUGE difference. I went from normal to in-ear earphones at the start of the year and started hearing new things all over the place in my music. It was amazing.

I hear no difference if a CD Track is ripped and encoded by me, I'm a better audiophile than those P2P fags who remix and distort songs.

Also, transcodes really suck.

Can't tell the difference between CD and MP3 but I can tell the difference between ripped and real CD's

I find it odd that you can tell the difference between the latter and yet not the former.

Wouldn't training yourself to become an audiophile just degenerate from the overall experience of music though, because you're having to spend more and more on equipment just to get something "acceptable"?

You could say that about anything really. If you expose yourself to quality literature, or art, movies, or whatever, your overall experience of the whole field might become limited.

Perhaps much the same way as you compare an amateur photography, and maybe yes you can appreciate it, but if you've exposed yourself to high art photography, you could probably tell the difference. The camera, the equipment and their skills really show.

I can't really think of a better example to explain it.
