Hi everyone,

This is a bit early considering I'm in year 10 but I recently got really interested in veterinary studies.
Though biology has interested me throughout high school, I feel like I am better at humanities subjects and as a result am taking legal, business, eco, ext. 1 english, advanced math and accelerated software engineering. However, these subjects are literally not at ALL related to science/medicine which is terrible because now they're locked in and I really want the opportunity to do veterinary courses in the future.

I think that though my atar will be better as I'm doing subjects that I'm stronger in, I won't be able to study a doctorate for veterinary science since I haven't done biology, physics nor chemistry in high school...

Does anyone know if its still possible to become a vet with these subjects (sorry if this is a totally stupid thread but just asking for your opinion!) and the potential atar? (my school averages in the high 90s so that will probably be mine ;( )

I rrly appreciate it guys and ANYONE who has anything to say PLS say it like every experience is fresh and helps me a bunch!!

Thanks

yo ive got a friend trying to go into the same area of study as you so this is all from her:

if ur wanting to study at usyd, the course has no prerequisites there (B Vet Biology / Doctor of Vet Medicine), but unimelb and some other places has assumed knowledge from bio/chem. you'll end up doing y12 stuff in the first term which can be difficult to catch up on but u can do a MOOC (a bridging course after hsc)—not sure if there's one for science tho, a lot of people do it for math adv and stuff.

also, you need to make sure you have experience working in a vet clinic / farm areas since that's what they're also looking for

--im personally not well versed in this area at all but i think id check out bridging courses and if theres options, just do the subjects that ur good at and get the atar u need then learn other stuff later! regardless, theres always options to study what u want, just might take a bit longer. :biglaugh:

i feel you, the hsc science syllabus sucks so i get why u don't want to go this route.

fucking memorization of retarded case studies or other trivial crap is prevalent in all three sciences, physics chem biology.

adding onto that, for usyd requires taking casper exam, an online situation scenarios exam. i am also planning on trying for veterinary at either usyd or queensland uni. i dont do biology asw, and usyd doesnt require it to be a prereq so u should be fine. also make sure to have alot of experiences. for example i volunteer at australia zoo, whale sight seeings (i am planning on marine biology if i dont make vet), work at my local vet as front desk, and also i am involved in alot of charities and stuff like wildlife wise :)
