Notice that I have exactly 10 units.

However, If I change one of the units from a respectable high 80s/low 90s, to a 1 or 3, the atar only drops by a few marks.

Now, if I were to onnly do 9 units and get 95 in all, they would not even allow me an atar. But because I turned up to an exam and probably guessed some questions, they will give me an atar (albeit shitty)?

Can anyone explain how this works?

ATAR is a rank, not a mark.

it is likely if you got a mark of 1/3 they would deem it a non serious attempt thus u would not get an atar anyway

No. As long as the student hasn't given indication of a non-serious attempt they count it as serious.
I mean, even only answering one question is serious as long as the student didn't write stupid shit elsewhere.
The marker would just assume the student didn't have the knowledge to answer the question.

no, if you just attempt multiple choice/or other small parts it is classed as a non-serious attempt
