ACT introduces gay marriage legislation

The ACT will legislate to recognise same-sex civil marriages, the first Australian jurisdiction to properly confer such recognition.
Apparently the Rudd hammer has come down and b& the ACT's move to legalise gay marriage, after Rudd promised he wouldn't interfere in state and territory legislation.

ACT dumps gay 'marriage' law

THE ACT Government has been forced to dump plans to legally recognise same-sex civil union ceremonies after the Federal Government refused to support the move.

ACT Attorney-General Simon Corbell said yesterday the Commonwealth had advised him it would override the laws if passed by the ACT Legislative Assembly.

The ACT Government originally passed its Civil Partnerships Bill in 2006 but it was disallowed by the Howard government.
Mr Corbell had hoped the new Government would take a different approach, especially after Prime Minister Kevin Rudd promised in December not to interfere with state and territory legislation.
But Mr Corbell said the ACT had been presented with a "stark choice" by the new Government: proceed with the legislation and face certain veto or change the legislation.
"Given the stubborn refusal of the Federal Government to consider any compromise, the territory has decided to amend its legislation to provide for a form of civil partnerships without ceremony," Mr Corbell said.
"This will allow gay and lesbian couples in Canberra to legally formalise their relationships and unequivocally demonstrate their legal status so as to access Commonwealth superannuation, taxation and social security law reforms."

There is absolutely no reason as to why 2 men or 2 women should have the right to a marriage, civil union or anything else of that nature. Such a relationship doesn't have any of the capacities of a male-female union and therefore deserves none of the benefits. Trust Labor to waste government time and money with this crap.

Between the apology, Australia 2020 and this stupidity, Rudd has managed to annoy me more than Howard did in his entire term, somebody please end it.
I didn't actually know you felt that way.

...why? If you're talking about childbearing, then that's a morally indefensible viewpoint, given the current overpopulation of the planet (and especially since there are so many children unadopted).
