I was just browsing the App store last night when I searched for 'HSC' and an app called CalculATAR came up. I'm not sure how accurate it is but if someone gives me their marks I can try it for them.

It's made by Samuel Klistorner & the only info I could find on it is here.

i just used it.. and i dont think atar calculators can be used until the 14th of december when the HSC marks come out. mainly because i put my school marks in it and it came out with 82.9 where as the people on this website to which i gave my rankings and subjects and whatnot said i'd get 96. so yeah. and atar calculators (like the iphone one) don't take into account scaling, your rankings or your schools rankings.

Yeah, it's based more on your external marks than internals. There's a lot of factors to consider & there's no ATAR calculator that takes all of them into account.

Hey guys, Sam here (developer of the app). Found this thread while searching my app on the google.

Just to clear things up - the app does not use school or personal ranking but it DOES scale your mark based on the subject. For example it scales Advanced English up and Standard English down (so to speak). The scaling is based on 2010 results.

It then selects your top 10 units based on the scaled mark and adds the scaled mark to get your aggregated mark, which is converted to your ATAR estimate.

Gigacube, you are correct - there are many factors to consider when calculating your ATAR, and only UAC can calculate your ATAR for the year. This app is only an estimate based on your marks and last years scaling.

What i don't understand is how to estimate your ATAR based on school rank and subject rank. Could someone please explain it to me and I may incorporate that into the calculATAR?

Also if you have any q's or features you'd like please let me and i'll do my best to incorporate them.

But Advanced and Standard English scale the same, but align differently...?

And ATAR estimating on school rank and subject rank is very subjective and it's based on the 'vibes' one feels when looking at them. It's not a science, it's an art.

e.g. the average atar last year was 69.80, so if say you were an average student at an average school then you would be expected to get around 70

if you were an average student at say a school ranked 100th out of the ~1000 schools in NSW (90th percentile) then you would expect about 94

etc.

Im not so sure it works that way.

I can be in a school thats top 10 (aka 1%) and not get 99 or even 90+ (10th percentile).

I could be coming 1st in all my subjects in a school thats top 10 and still not get over 90 for my ATAR. Simply because the subjects i do are not the subjects that my school excels at.

So i still dont understand how you can base ATAR only on school ranking and subject ranking like most of you do here.

of course there are exceptions, no one can predict them, that's why they're estimates

Also wonderful app was one of the first few to download a few weeks back when I got my phone and have been using it somewhat and seems pretty accurate.
Feedback: supply a mx1 subject thing worth 2u coz I can't calculate correctly as I do mx2 and I think I'll get around 93 in mx1.

I like the timetable feature but could you make it so that we don't have to enter estimates for each subjects? I just want to be able to pick the subjects that I'm doing & be able to see when the HSC exam is on for it without having to enter marks.

No need to be a calculHATAR

I was only trying to work it out and giving some cases.

Riproot, I don't really understand ur first couple of lines. But thanks for the feedback, glad it's giving good approximations. I'll look into making maths ex1 as 2u.

I'm making a list of requested changes and subject additions and will put it through all in one update.

As for estimates - i tried it out with a few friends who finished their HSC over the last few years and i was surprised that the estimates are fairly close. Even those who finished before 2010, the estimate was only a coupla marks off. I’ll be checking again when I get my trials marks back.

For the feature list – how bout a countdown to exams?!

Tram- thanks for the purch. Good to see that the estimates were close to actual ATAR scores.
